The dichotomy of growing up with means vs not is an interesting one. Both can have massive benefits and big downside.
Means; you rarely chase futile material items. You understand their non fulfilling and the dopamine of the new watch or car is short lived. You’ve seen it for what it is since you’re around it daily. BUT you can tip the scale to not hustling in any endeavor and rationalize Everything as “ not worth it.” Eventually u get beat out in every arena by the kid whose fire burns hotter. You also have the liability of expectation by friends, family, and foes alike. That cripples many from even throwing their keys over the fence and getting in the mix. You end up calling uncle, cause why is the rubicon worth getting killed over.
Hard knocks; The biggest benefit of coming from nothing is there’s simply nothing to lose. U can paint the town with shots and if one hits you’re a hometown hero. The downside is the same fire that burns inside is rarely quenched by any monetary success. You reach heights you thought would extinguish the chip you carry and realize it may have cost too much. You also have to deal with crabs in a barrel. Everyone from youre hometown is projecting all their insecurities onto you. The more optimistic you are, the more they’ll resent you for you’re resilience. With that being said; If u can enjoy the journey then you’ve won the game.
Pro athlete podcasts, like all other podcasts are nearing a point of over saturation. Stories have to become fables, a race to the dopamine bottom for attention. Gen Z’s won’t look as kindly to it. Especially when you retired in 2003. Watch out
@BrianNorgard The people that work at those places won’t feel comfortable in how social, beachy, and lifestyle oriented OC is. South OC is far too socially strong and fun for many of the engineers who’d be better suited for the Cupertino to daily city peninsula stretch.
Chamath is doing what he always does. He realizes an economic collapse is coming and is hoping to avoid any personal blame by pretending to care about issues that don’t make any sense like this. He’s got a new schtick for every season
@petergyang If you don’t notice a gigantic difference in the people between NorCal and SoCal and the weather then you won’t be able to figure it out. SoCal people are the most social and active people in the country and NorCal is for sure the least social
