@KirkpatrickMike@CynicalPublius According to my .mil education, Under USC Title 10, unless withheld by the POTUS or restricted by legislation, the SoD (or SoW if you prefer) exercises Command Authority based on his role under the POTUS's role as Commander in Chief, which is why his picture on all CoC boards
@DOGTURDGUY@JeremyTate41 Sasse is referring to the formalized "Prussian Model" that came into vouge beginning in the 1870's and reinforced by Dewey and other "Reformers" in the first three decades of the 20th Century. The model you are speaking with the small local schools was it's predecessor.
@KirkpatrickMike@CynicalPublius "Under the President, the Secretary of Defense exercises authority, direction, and control over the Department, which includes the separately organized military departments of Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Joint Chiefs of Staff providing military advice" (Federal Register)
@StanleytheAngry@CanadianGirlRM@DukeBell12 Diefenbaker was not a toady of the US, and was pushing back against the US on Cuba and a lot of other issues at the time. It came down to $$$$, and stuff was just getting really expensive in the jet age. Besides, Pierre Trudeau essentially blew up the Canadian military in 1968
@Blvcko00 Pretty much the same reason that British Rail abandoned around 10,000 miles of railroad (including 7,000ish miles of passenger routes) between the end of WWII and 2000. $$$
@Lee98604032@CDNPolicyHawk Without revealing much about my previous life, earlier versions of about everything Ukraine both uses and has been facing were known & utilized over the last 2 decades or more. Against a better prepared military than Russia, these systems would not have been as overwhelming.
@GeorgeDAndrews2 A lot of the Union soldiers were also descendants of folks George Washington and Thomas Jefferson had sent armies after when they didn't agree to a tax and were pushed deep into the Appalachian Mountains and beyond.
@CanadianGirlRM@DukeBell12 Maybe he should put up the old Canadian Flag from WWI through the mid-1960's when Canadian industry was state of the art, the RCN had Aircraft Carriers, and the RCAF was a world-class Air Force. Love the AI with "Canadian" soldiers in WWII US kit coming of a US LCI!
@Lee98604032@CDNPolicyHawk "Glad we didn't buy the fancy gear" is a heck of a take! I understand that Canadian national defense is near bottom on the priority list, but recovering from a shortage of modern equipment at the beginning of a war can be absolutely brutal on soldiers and the country at large!
@JimmyThomist Double-edged sword. There are good arguments for and against some form of "Up or Out". One problem with it is the use a "Year-Group" cohort/timeline with little variation allowed; therefore, a year group that is smaller may have fewer qualified folks than a larger one.
@crimechatbritt@EricSpracklen Depends on where you settle. The nice part about a Mil pension is that, even though it is not enough to completely retire on, you can move to an area you want to live with a reasonable CoL and take a job that you want to do even if it pays a little less. Plus, VA mortgage helps!
@Lee98604032@CDNPolicyHawk The US MiC thought they would benefit from AVRO's demise but reality was that Canada was scaling back defense spending overall + the emerging convenient fiction missiles made aircraft obsolete. The RCAF decayed from a world-class Air Force in the 1950/60's to what you see today.
@StevenJBurns Dumb. Use specialty and incentive pays until they are fully trained (6-11 years, role dependent), THEN start select to Warrant Officer. How can there be effective cooperation with other branches/services when cyber enablers outrank most of the folks they're supposed to support?
@aroog1278 You already do, and have had to since 1968, even though I am reliably informed around election time every year that forcing people to show Photo IDs is Racist.
@Lee98604032@CDNPolicyHawk I agree; however, AVRO-Canada, Orenda, and Canadair were pretty much allowed to go out of business (or in the case of AVRO, more or less run out of business by) the Canadian Government.
@staubingenetics@Aku_700 In a lot of places, you can. In Florida, in justified circumstances you are also protected from prosecution if you run over someone attempting to assault you while in a vehicle.
@KirkpatrickMike@CynicalPublius Actually it Does. In 1903 the position of Commanding General US Army was abolished and the command authorities transferred to the Secretary of War. The lead uniformed position became the Chief of Staff (Not Commander). Chiefs of Staff exercise authority on behalf of a Commander
@dimitrilascaris 1) Depends on what munitions come with the HIMARS as to range. 2) "Only Fight the Americans"; so no real Canadian NATO commitment? 2) Using your logic, the Canadian Army is optional & should only be configured to conduct UN/Peacekeeping stuff and doesn't need any Artillery.
