Redeeming Hope For The Disabled is a registered NPO based in Johannesburg, led by disabled people aiming to Protect, Empower and Integrate fellow disabled.
Since the #GNU (Government of National Unity) South Africa law enforcement with the Department of home Affairs (@HomeAffairsSA) are engaging in massive cleanups and they are rounding up non-nationals without legal documents to deport them to their origin of their countries.
The 2024 DHA White paper on Citizens, Immigration and Refugee Protection, states that there an estimated 828,404 inactive asylum-seekers. The inactive asylum applicants refer to individuals who were granted asylum visas but subsequently vanished without a trace from the @HomeAffairsSA system. How can such a large number of asylees disappear from the system?
A large number of this group are now called undocumented (or labelled as illegal) which makes it easier to deport them.
The DHF has not provided a reason why such big number of asylees (90% of all asylees) are inactive. Reliable research studies and civil societies attribute the disappearance of larger number of asylum-seekers from the system of the DHA to the deliberate actions of the government working to make the asylum services inaccessible for refugees and asylum-seekers. closure of refugee reception centres, long processing times for asylum applications, institutional xenophobia and corruption led to this.
We cannot claim that they are inactive because they fail to renew their documents or fail to document themselves. We know that asylum-seekers or new arrivals have been suffering physical abuse and losing their lives in long queues in Refugee Reception Centres. They queue for days and weeks unit their papers long expired and dates of renewal passes or denied access at all, then after a while they are erased from the system.
Amnesty internation and other humanitarian organisation have also been reporting that a 96 % rejection of asylum application in South Africa.
How many of these inactive asylees are now labelled as undocumented/ illegal and is it fair deport them when it was @DHA failed to document them?

Testimonials of change are pouring in. Let's share one here...What a difference we will make in these lives if we can get them tools to start their own businesses! Please connect with us if you can help. Thank you @UNHCRInnovation for supporting the initiative this far.
If we listened to what refugees want rather than telling them what they need then change would be possible. We want to see a world in which everyone has control over their own futures.
