At least 17 people have died following a tragic multi-vehicle accident at Salama along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. A lorry reportedly lost control due to brake failure and rammed into oncoming traffic, including a matatu carrying passengers to a prayer service. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich was preparing for an investigative assignment in the Mau Forest to expose how thousands of Kipsigis evictees have been deprived of millions of shillings in compensation, with the journalist set to publish a detailed exposé on the alleged diversion of the funds through officials, brokers and proxies.

Gachagua further claims that a late-night meeting on Monday between President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen preceded a decision to stop Kiprotich from publishing the investigation, after which DCI Director Mohamed Amin assigned a team led by recalled former police officer Zachary Kariuki to place the journalist under 24-hour surveillance.
