In 1848, Biddy Mason was forced to walk 1,700 miles from Mississippi to Utah, then taken on a second march to California. After learning slavery was illegal there, she sued her enslaver, won her freedom in court, and bought land that ultimately made her one of the richest women in Los Angeles.

Ruth Carol Taylor, a New York nurse applied to be a “Stewardess” with TWA.
She was rejected for being Black. She filed a complaint.
Soon Mohawk was recruiting Black people. She was hired becoming the first African American flight attendant in the United States.
Ruth Carol Taylor fought tirelessly against discriminatory hiring practices.
Her fierceness and persistence paved the way for greater diversity and inclusion in the skies, symbolizing a significant victory in the broader civil rights movement.
Keep in mind Republicans are trying to erase diversity and inclusion so they can hire white privileged mediocrity.

I, Too
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
I, too, am America.
In the late 1940s, 12 Black women in Lynwood Park, Georgia, refused to wait for the system to serve their children. They raised money through their sewing club, bought land, and built the FIRST schoolhouse for Black children in their community with their own hands. This is what Black excellence, determination, and love looks like.

Flags across Washington, DC are lowered to half-staff in honor of Reverend Jesse Jackson.
As a civil rights champion, voice of moral clarity, and one of DC's first shadow senators, his indomitable courage shaped the course of history in our city and throughout our nation.
We pay tribute to his extraordinary life and legacy.
It's the 6th anniversary of Go-Go becoming the official music of Washington, DC.
Our creative economy generates $15 billion every year —and we're proud to invest in our artists, creatives, and music right back.
Let's celebrate the soundtrack of our lives, Go-Go.🪘🎶
Today, we honor Justice Thurgood Marshall—a champion for equality whose tireless advocacy transformed American justice. As chief counsel for the NAACP, he argued the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case before the Supreme Court, ending legal school segregation.
Justice Marshall's legacy reminds us that the pursuit of justice requires courage, persistence, and an unshakeable belief in equality under the law. This Black History Month, we celebrate his monumental contributions to our nation.

Black History Month is a time to recognize the lived, shared experience of all Black folks who have fundamentally shaped, challenged, and ultimately strengthened America. It’s about taking an unvarnished look at the past so that we can create a better future. As we mark 100 years of celebrating Black history, let’s honor the sacrifices of the leaders who came before us, and recommit ourselves to continuing their work.
