The US today formalised its assault on the International Criminal Court, and the concept of international law.

And in so doing, called on others to assist in its destruction of a system of rules that provides the only guardrails and scant, nonetheless important accountability mechanisms for the most egregious crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes and attacks on other nations.

A system meant to distribute justice equally, as flawed as it is, a system the US seeks to destroy in pursuit of a world where might is right.

A system that is humanity’s best chance of creating lasting peace, and that contemplates a world without conflict, exploitation and supremacy.

The Australian government must condemn this attack on international law.

And should play no part in bringing it about.
