Gavin Newsom just appointed Haaris Syed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Syed had sued the county because its standard retirement plan used interest-bearing investments.

Those investments conflict with Sharia finance principles that ban riba or interest.

He demanded special religious accommodations and the county eventually added Sharia-compliant options to the plans.

CAIR-LA publicly celebrated both his earlier commissioner appointment and this elevation to judge.

They called him an American Muslim attorney with integrity.

This is the shift playing out in real time.

Public employers change their own rules to fit one religious framework after a lawsuit.

Then the person who forced that change gets handed a robe and the power to decide cases for everyone else.

Traditional standards apply across the board for most people.

Special carve-outs and official praise go to those who litigate to import their own system.
