A baby was admitted to NICU.

I asked the mother: "Has your baby passed the first stool?"

She didn't know.

The two nurses on duty didn't know either.

The only nurse who knew hadn't documented it or handed over the information.
Critical information!

A friend was booked for surgery at a hospital.

She showed up on the day, only to be told:

"You missed a clinic appointment. No test results. We have to reschedule."

No one told her about the clinic appointment. She asked questions, but somehow, that never came up.

A lot of times, we assume patients know what to do automatically, especially if they sounded smart during the review, but most patients need guidance.

And when we don't communicate clearly, patients suffer.

Healthcare workers:
Rather than say: "Come back for surgery in 2 weeks."

It's better to say: "You have a clinic appointment in 2 weeks. Bring these test results. If you miss it, we can't proceed."

Document everything. Hand over critical information, even if you're exhausted.

Ask your patients: "Do you have questions? Did I explain clearly?"
Be kind and patient with them.

Patients:
Ask questions. Write things down. Repeat back what you heard.
If something doesn't make sense, feel free to say: "I don't understand, please explain again."

Bring someone with you if you can.

Finally, remember that one Nigerian doctor handles 4,000-10,000 patients, and chances are that theyve seen at least 20 patients on any given day, so be in charge of your health.

Clarify, always.
