Are you team Empanada or team Cornish Pasty?

The history of the ultimate portable meal took two separate paths before colliding in South America.

First came the empanada. Arriving with Spanish settlers in the 16th century, it slowly evolved from a simple European pie into Argentina’s beautifully crimped, delicately spiced culinary icon.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the Cornish pasty was being invented for pure industrial survival. Deep in the tin mines of Britain, workers needed a rugged, heavyweight meat pouch with a thick, disposable crust edge. This edge served as a built-in handle so miners wouldn't poison their lunch with arsenic-covered fingers.

In the 19th century, these two timelines finally met. When British miners were recruited to dig silver and build railways in Latin America, they brought their heavy-duty pasties straight into empanada territory—leaving such a lasting legacy that traditional pasties (known locally as pastes) are still baked and celebrated in Mexican mining towns like Real del Monte today.

(Yes, Pasty not Pastry. It derives directly from the Medieval French word paste, denoting a sturdy, standalone dough baked without a dish to hold its shape, completely unrelated to the delicate, flaky sweet treats we usually call pastries.)

If you want a sandwich at this legendary spot, you might have to catch it first. Welcome to Café Paulín, a historic downtown sandwich bar where lunchtime feels like a high-speed sport.

There are no traditional waiters walking to tables here. Instead, everyone crowds around a massive, U-shaped wooden bar. When your food is ready, the staff literally slide and launch the heavy plates straight down the smooth counter. The dishes fly down the bar, braking perfectly right in front of your seat.

People queue down the street for the show, but they stay for the incredible food. The portions are massive, featuring local favorites like the Sánguche de Peceto (tender, slow-cooked beef) and even sandwiches stuffed with entire slices of thick potato tortilla. It is loud, fast, chaotic, and easily one of the most unique dining rituals in South America.
