Benzema had some genuinely poor spells in La Liga. During the three peat era, in the league, he missed chance after chance, to the point where “Lord Benzema” compilations were everywhere and many fans were against his contract extensions. At the same time, opponents were more worried about facing Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Isco and Benzema was not in the list.

But he was always a big game player. He consistently delivered in UCL, and his underlying quality was never in doubt.

Those inconsistent league performances remain one of the few blemishes on an otherwise elite career. They also partly explain why Cristiano Ronaldo ended up with fewer assists in La Liga than he arguably deserved.

As for Benzema’s claim that he played for Cristiano, it is both true and not entirely accurate. He naturally drops deep, links play, and facilitates attacking moves unlike a traditional No. 9, and he is elite at that role. But at the same time, there were clear periods where he underperformed in front of goal, missing chances and falling short in the primary responsibility of a forward during certain periods of his Madrid career.

However, this does not make him any less of an elite player. Almost all top players go through dips in form, and Benzema consistently showed up in big games when it mattered most.

There is a reason I want to bring this up now. Letting Karim Benzema go without a contract extension around 2018 would have been a huge mistake.

Today, there are sections of the Madrid fanbase who think a player with the best UCL knockout record post 2020, and the most goals and assists for Madrid in finals by the age of just 25, yes, more than Cristiano or Di Stefano or any other legend, should be sold because he is “incompatible” with another player.

This is the same player who has matched the UCL knockout assists of Messi while playing around 50 fewer matches and scored one of the greatest elclassico solo goals in his average season.

Judging elite players purely on short-term fit narratives while ignoring their pedigree and impact in the biggest moments is how you end up making generational mistakes.
