The biggest difference between even the worst first world countries like America Fuck Yeah and VishwaGutter (and other 3rd world shit-holes),

is that in the first world, a person has much more agency/freedom/support to change their life circumstances, to reject social norms, to go against society.

Much easier to leave a husband, or a wife. Much easier to be LGBTQ+. Much easier to reject religion and religious impositions.

In short, people have a much better opportunity to live the life they way they want to, not according to dictates of society, nation, religion or even family.

Sure that freedom is not absolute (it should be ideally) but it's so much better than VishwaGutter.

If a man thinks paying for dinner, sending gifts, or spending money gives him a claim over a woman's body, he's not misunderstanding consent, he's revealing the values he was raised with. That kind of entitlement doesn't appear out of nowhere, it's often a reflection of the upbringing, family attitudes, and beliefs that taught him women can be earned instead of respected.

Speak to women who have experience with dating in India and you'll realise that plenty of men already believe they're entitled to your body simply because they paid for dinner, bought you a drink, or because you had the audacity to show up for the date, and invest some time in them.

That's why it isn't "just a joke", it never is just a joke.

It takes shockingly little in this country to reduce women to commodities. Our time, attention, affection, and consent are constantly treated as things men can earn, buy, or lay claim to.

So no, we aren't angry because of the Rs. 370 attached to a woman's consent. We're angry because the joke draws its humour from a culture of male entitlement that women deal with every single day.

Also, the fact that so many people don't see the problem is not a defence of the joke.

It is, in fact, THE problem.
