How can schools reduce exclusions and absence and keep children in school?
This research looked at six secondary schools which had lower levels of exclusion and absence and good academic progress, within a context of high levels of pupil deprivation.
They found that whilst the schools took different approaches, they all focused on flexibility and responding to individual differences. They encouraged positive relationships between staff and students and a sense of belonging. They were values-driven, valuing equity and inclusion. And they actively gave second chances.
The authors point out that this is not in line with ‘zero tolerance’ policies nor the focus on ‘consistency’ in behaviour favoured by the DfE.

@drgeorgethecrip @billshortenmp Shared house with community member, host family or living alone - all with visiting support give higher quality of life and generally cheaper than segregation. #endsegregation
Good on Ireland to announce policy advice to continue transitioning to an inclusive education system. Keep your the great efforts to support all students .
ALL students in NSW, no matter their circumstance, should be welcomed & supported in the general classroom of their local school, all day, everyday. 206,000 students with disabilities in NSW deserve better & should be "learning alongside their peers".
The ‘gag laws’ in Victoria prevent people under guardianship and administration orders from speaking out about their experiences.
We joined our friends at @VALID_Inc this morning to protest against these unfair laws and ask @VicGovAu to change them.

An engaging virtual call with Minister of Education @TonyButi_MLA from the state of Western Australia today. Always a pleasure to discuss supporting inclusive schools and classrooms under the requirement of the CRPD and human rights legal framework.
"... the Commission has apparently resisted, with no explanation, persistent demands by the disability community ... for the proposed recommendations of the Commission to be released in draft form for comment." 2/ #DisabilityRC@MarkDreyfusKCMP @billshortenmp
In research published recently, nationally over 70% of families of children with disability reported having experienced gatekeeping or restrictive practices. Why do we hurt and reject our most vulnerable?
A reminder that #InclusiveEducation cannot happen in segregated settings. General Comment 6 on the #CRPD is clear that segregating students on the basis of #Disability constitutes #Discrimination.
We have 5 decades of evidence showing better outcomes from inclusion.
@leeannjung Yes! People often ask about our transition to being an inclusive district and if we would have done anything different. Our answer is a loud and clear, “We would have started sooner!”#LeadingForAll#TheTimeIsNow
