@ForestedDepth Form follows function, if the text's primary function is to be read, then i'd consider almost anything else. You don't have to do anything normally, look at Mork Borg. But harmonic colours are not something you want to put text in.
@Zwitterionstrat@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth It's clearly not, they are calculating the encounter, that isn't a story choice, its a gaming choice. A story choice would be considering if they should kill them, or spare them, talk them down, taking into account repercussions of the death. The wishes of the noble, the law, etc
@Zwitterionstrat@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth It's a lack of creativity to just give up and allow the PC to just kill the NPC thoughtlessly because mechanics dictate that he can do so without harm. Who does that? Removing the RP element from RPG is insane. Mechanic describe the world, but they aren't the story.
@Zwitterionstrat@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth The Noble could be a pacifist, and killing the thief would have the PC hauled up on charges. The blade could be poisoned, and be far more deadly. The Thief could be a brother of some other noble, playing at bandit. All sorts of consequences can come from attacking this bandit.
@Zwitterionstrat@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth Most systems acknowledge they cannot possibly cover all possibilities, and a ruling should be decided on by the GM. Hell, even wargames do this, breaking the rules is in the rules.
@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth Even in the bloat of Dnd, you can introduce balancing factors such as poisons, etc to make it far more dangerous than see on a surface level. So i still think this is a player/GM issue more than one of HP. And being wounded is also not something to be sniffed at in most systems.
@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth Walking dead reduces HP to 4 conditions. And i've seen a few other methods. But all are HP by any other name. Like walking dead, which is basically everyone has 4 hp. If you have some suggestions that i could look at that offer a better alt, i'll give them a look.
@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth I see what you are going for, but this is still metaing the game, pushing aside the RP for a fairly callous approach. But if everything has the possibility to 1 shot you, then the problem goes away. A knife in CoC, can kill you, outright. The math always = possible death.
@PedroColsones@ForestedDepth This is a problem with the system, not HP. In CoC, a lowly thug with a table leg can kill you. Secondly, the player you are describing is meta gaming. Which is just a bit sad to see. Third, you are restricting yourself to the rules as written. Knife to the neck=lethal.
@ForestedDepth Horror comes in two parts, where most horror fails is at the table as the players or the GM don't set and keep the tone, constantly reverting to humour and in jokes. Secondly most horror in games is hammer horror, all visual trope, with no real stakes or consequences.

Prepping for @FreeLeaguePub Blade Runner and the @aintslayed Electric Dreams is wonderful.
If a blend of AP and audio drama is your thing, I would highly recommend.
But not to my players because spoilers, obvs.

This is exactly right. If I found out my DM fudged a roll to keep me alive, I'd bow out of the campaign.
Risk is an important part of the game and failing to enforce the consequences of the risks taken by players is patronizing.

💀The house was never regarded as “haunted”. There were no tales of rattling chains, cold currents of air, extinguished lights, or faces at the window. What was really beyond dispute is that a frightful proportion of persons died there🎨Yogsothery Art💀#HPLovecraft#Lovecraftian
