In her grieving, inspired to seek out and help others who are in pain

5/16/10, 62 Precinct Det Carlos Olmedo seriously injured making an arrest. His survival uncertain, NYPD gathered to support him at Lutheran Hospital, Brooklyn. Tatyana Timoshenko, mom of Detective Russel Timoshenko, taken from us in the line of duty 71 Pct, 7/14/07, told me that she wanted to visit him. We went to the hospital a couple of weeks later.

Can’t imagine the courage and the love that compelled her to do that. Words cannot describe the lift, and the support her presence to Carlos’s family, and everyone who learned of her visit. (Keep in mind that she was going into a hospital room to see someone who was essentially in the same condition her son Russel was, the days before he passed away.)

But there she was, in that hospital room, making an impact that she will never fully realize. I could see the toll this visit took on her as we were leaving. I knew there was a pier nearby, 59th St Ferry Pier. I hoped being near the water would somehow lift her spirits a bit. (Below is the photo we took that day.)

I have learned something I believe profound about grieving, through Tatyana. Two months after Russel was taken from us, Commissioner Raymond Kelly gave her a job in One Police Plaza. Her office became almost like a shrine of honor, with photos of her dear Russel. Over her desk, there was the prayer card with his photo. Soon after, the prayer card for my nephew Michael joined Russel, side-by-side. Then, several months later, Tatyana put the prayer card of a baby, only a few months old, who had died of cancer.

I cannot speak for her, but it appeared to me that in her grieving, she was driven to support and love and bring comfort to others who were suffering pain as well. That is what she did for me when she put Michael‘s prayer card next to Russel. She did that when she displayed the prayer card of the baby. And she did that in June 2010, when she visited Carlos, who thank God, recovered from his injuries.

Thank you for the lessons Tatyana Timoshenko, Carlos Olmedo, and all of those who harness their pain into love and support for others in life.

How do NHL players play 82 games without taking a game off ? You bat 4-5 times a game, and have to run 90feet if you make contact. What the hell is going on ?
