Formal adoption will await the World Health Assembly, but an important win for multilateralism, for globsl health, and for the @WHO
Congratulations & thanks to the extraordinary efforts of @DrTedros and his team, our global partners, and, of course, our 🇬🇧 negotiating team
After over 3 years of negotiations, WHO Member States have finalized a draft #PandemicAccord to make the world safer from future pandemics.
The draft agreement will now be submitted to WHO’s Member States meeting at the #WHA78 for consideration and adoption
Proposals within the text include:
✅ Boosting global collaboration on prevention & preparedness
✅ Strengthening health systems & R&D worldwide
✅ Creating a fair system for pathogen access & benefit-sharing
✅ Building a skilled global health emergency workforce
The proposal respects national sovereignty—the draft agreement does not provide WHO any authority to direct, order, alter or prescribe national laws or policies, or mandate States to take specific actions.

I thank national negotiators for their foresight, commitment and tireless work. Gratitude as well to civil society partners. We look forward to #WHA78 where countries will consider the agreement for final adoption.
No woman should die giving life.
This year’s #WorldHealthDay – which marks 5 years from the Sustainable Development Goals deadline — will focus on maternal and newborn health.
The campaign will call for a major intensification of efforts to ensure access to high quality care for women and babies, especially in the poorest countries and crisis settings where most maternal deaths occur.

📢 New study on causes of maternal deaths:
Severe bleeding (haemorrhage) and hypertensive disorders like preeclampsia are the leading causes of maternal deaths, together claiming around 130,000 lives worldwide in 2020.
Tragically, too many women lack access to lifesaving treatments and quality care during pregnancy and childbirth. These deaths are preventable—urgent action is needed to ensure every woman can access safe, high-quality maternity services that save lives and protect health.

Restreindre l’accès à l'avortement met la vie des femmes en danger.
On protège votre droit de choisir et on fait en sorte que ce soit plus facile – pas plus difficile – de recourir à l'avortement quand vous en avez besoin.
Sexual and reproductive health and rights, including access to quality abortion services, for every woman, everywhere, are vital for achieving gender equality.
That is why I am proud to have signed the #SheDecides Champion statement on #InternationalSafeAbortionDay
At today’s HRC57 side event for #WorldContraceptionDay , the 🇬🇧 showed support for women’s and girls’ right to be able to make their own, informed decisions about sex and childbearing.
