POST OFFICE JAILED AN INNOCENT WOMAN

Imagine. You run a small @PostOffice in Hull. You show up every day, you serve your community, you do the job. Then one day a computer program called Horizon decides you owe £59,000 that never existed. A computer program with a known glitch problem.

Post Office didn't check the software. It just marched Janet Skinner into court in 2007 and got her jailed for 9 months. She served 2 behind bars. She lost her house. She lost her job. She lost her name in the eyes of her own neighbours, all because nobody in a position of power fancied questioning a machine.

Here's where any decent organisation would stop digging the hole ... The Post Office kept digging.

A year after she walked out of prison, they hauled her back into court again, this time chasing her for "proceeds of crime."

Proceeds of a crime she never committed, calculated by a system that couldn't add up in the first place. Bold strategy from the people who broke the calculator in the first place.

Less than two weeks after that fresh nightmare finally ended, Janet's body gave out completely. Neurological collapse. Paralysed from the neck down.

Doctors told her she'd never walk again.

She spent a year in a wheelchair and two years learning to walk. She says her own immune system turned on her. Years of fighting a system that refused to admit fault, and in the end it was her own body that surrendered first.

So how does this story end? With an apology? A cheque that actually matches what she lost? Of course not.

In 2025, after everything, the compensation scheme handed her an offer worth around 15% of her claim.

Janet called it an insult. I'd call it a joke, except nobody's laughing, least of all the people who wrote the offer letter from the comfort of a job that still exists.

9 months in prison for a bug. 2 years in a wheelchair for the stress of proving her innocence. A payout that wouldn't cover the damage to her health, let alone her life. And somewhere, the people who signed off on her prosecution are still drawing a pension.

Nobody who signed off on any of this has lost a house, a job, or a night's sleep. They got promotions. She got a wheelchair and an insulting cheque. Accountability had every chance to show up here and chose not to..

The early signs of Andy Burnham’s premiership are not encouraging. He has been handed a blueprint for combating so-called ‘misinformation’ through psychological manipulation, writes Andrew Doyle.

Given that Sir Keir Starmer led the most authoritarian government in living memory, there is no guarantee that his successor will be any better.

Burnham has appointed two former Hope Not Hate members — from an organisation that has repeatedly smeared people with mainstream views as ‘far-right’ — to his team.

The Telegraph has revealed that a report, published in May and commissioned by the Government Office for Science, could influence the new Prime Minister’s approach to online misinformation and free speech.

Andrew says it offers a guide to what it calls the ‘psychological inoculation’ of the public.

Its fundamental ethos is both illiberal and undemocratic, and Burnham must reject it.

The report is beyond Orwellian. It is sinister.

We can’t say we’re shocked that Andy Burnham has sacked Bridget Phillipson as Education Secretary.

One of her first acts as Secretary of State was to torpedo the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 (HEFSA) — arguably the most consequential piece of free speech legislation in the past 15 years.

She reversed the commencement orders that would have brought the Act’s most important provisions into force, including the vital complaints scheme.

Rather than asking Parliament to do so, she bypassed it through ministerial fiat. The Free Speech Union challenged this in the High Court on two grounds: first, that it breached the sacrosanct constitutional principle that a minister cannot defy the will of Parliament; and second, that she had failed to carry out an adequate impact assessment.

Days before the case was due to be heard, Bridget Phillipson partially U-turned, announcing that she would commence most of the key provisions — and she duly did.

We then became embroiled in a long-standing dispute over who had won the case. That mattered because it determined who would pay the legal costs.

The High Court decided that the Free Speech Union had won and ordered the Government to pay our costs.

Importantly, when Phillipson announced her partial U-turn, the Free Speech Union offered to settle if the Government paid £80,000 — around a quarter of our total legal costs.

Pretty fair, no?

Well, the Government refused. The Free Speech Union believes this was because Phillipson did not want to admit she had reversed course.

The High Court has now ordered the Government to pay all of our costs. Bridget Phillipson’s hubris has cost taxpayers around £200,000. Combined with the Government’s own legal costs, the total bill exceeds £500,000.

That also means we now have the resources to challenge Phillipson’s successor, Lucy Powell, should she attempt to reverse any of the commencement orders that bring HEFSA into force — including the much-needed complaints scheme for academics, university staff and visiting speakers, which is due to come into force on 1 September.
