Our statement after the legislature’s failure to include the Local Option Real Estate Transfer fee in the Affordable Homes Act. We are profoundly disappointed that this common sense tool was not included to allow cities and towns that wanted it to tackle the housing crisis.
Tonight we’re testifying @ Boston City Hall, urging councilors to uphold their budget amendments that fund crucial things like #AffordableHousing, #YouthJobs & other priorities of underserved communities.
Override the mayor’s veto & move funds to real needs. #bospoli

No is not an okay answer.
Write to your legislators about why we need every tool available to address the housing crisis, INCLUDING the transfer fee.

We need to provide immediate relief (rent control), build more affordable housing (with $$ from transfer fee), and make it easier for communities to own and control their own housing (tenant opportunity to purchase). The legislature has failed to act on all 3 of these.
Either we care about funding affordable housing or we don’t. A real estate transfer tax on high-value home sales would provide millions in urgently needed revenue. If the state is not planning to raise $ for affordable housing, then it is legislating for displacement.
.@RonMariano suggested Wednesday that lawmakers are reluctant to embrace a proposal that would allow cities and towns to tax high-dollar real estate sales saying he’s unsure “if it’s a solution” to the state’s raging housing crisis. https://t.co/gso3rODYDb via @BostonGlobe
