Runes and inscriptions are as programmable as bitcoin, and improvements to bitcoin's expressiveness also the expressiveness of runes and inscriptions.

Examples include:

- OP_CHECKTEMPLATEVERIFY would allow organizing open mints as OP_CTV trees which unfurl to leaf UTXOs containing the runes. This would allow for open mints where you either get the runes or your transaction isn't mined and you pay no fees, making it impossible to bid on an open mint, pay fees, and get no runes.

- SIGHASH_GROUP would allow more flexibility in committing with a signature to groups of inputs and outputs. It would allow selling variable amounts of runes from a single UTXO, without needing to split, sinc you could commit to your input UTXO, the output runestone, and the payment output. This also makes it easier to lift runes onto the Lightning Network, for arcane technical reasons.

- Standardizing the Taproot signature annex with a carve-out for unstructured data would allow making inscriptions in a single transaction, instead of needing a commit transaction and a reveal transaction.

When fees are high on Bitcoin, they tell you to use lightning network but the fact is that LN has been a complete and utter failure for many years now - it does not work as advertised!

Meanwhile, when fees are high on Ethereum L1, you can use L2's that have fast and cheap txs.

Bitcoin's entire value proposition rests of censorship-resistance, which can only be guaranteed by decentralized miners competing to produce blocks.

The current state of Bitcoin mining decentralization is, unfortunately, not great. Many large pools which were previously thought to be independent now seem to be mere proxies for AntPool, with the same transaction selection policies.

Fortunately, there is hope.

Stratum V2 is an upgrade to Bitcoin's pooled mining protocol which allows miners, not the pools they mine for, to choose the transactions included in each block. This allows miners to pool in order to reduce payout variance, without giving up their ability to construct block templates.

Stratum V2 has been in development for a long time, but it works, it's basically ready, and it's time for serious testing.

If you're a miner, consider giving one of your engineers time and a few machines to experiment with Stratum v2, point them at @DEMAND_POOL, a Stratum v2 mining pool, see how things work, and report anything that goes wrong. I'm sure there are fine folks who would love to help you in the Stratum V2 Discord.
