#COP28 So foreign minister @ignaziocassis just admitted in parliament that the new #Swiss pledges of 170 Mio. for @theGCF and other UN funds are part of an existing climate-related aid budget (ODA double counting), decided years ago. That means: no additional finance! @CANEurope
1/4. At #COP28, the pledges to the #LossAndDamage Fund total only $700m or just 0.2% of the $400 billion needed each year to address #LossAndDamage. To show just how small these pledges are, here they are in comparison to the earnings of the highest paid footballers in 2023.
Today, the Fossil of the Day award goes to:
🇪🇺The EU🇪🇺
For continously opposing to include #LossAndDamage in the #COP28 negotiations of the
New Collective Quantified Goal.
A clear signal that EU doesn't want to secure long-term
finance for those affected by climate change.
🔥 Mobilization has been, and is, a key tool for Climate Movement at COPs throughout the time.
✊🏽 Despite challenges at #COP28 and worldwide, activists continue to unite for change.

#EU is preaching water, but still drinking wine?🍷
EU’s call for #COP28 to make progress on fixing the world’s financial flows does not match their efforts to regulate their financial flows fuelling the #climatecrisis.

Important to see that @eucommission joins this new global tax taskforce led by France & Kenya.
Taxes must target big polluters - #fossilfuels#aviation#shipping#finance and be equitable.
At the same time, we need global #taxjustice reform to tackle tax avoidance and evasion.
Today at #COP28, world leaders are presenting their pledges at the World #ClimateAction Summit - #WCAS.
For the 🇪🇺, @EU_Commission@vonderleyen and @eucopresident Charles Michel join national heads of state and government.

@joethw8s thanks for the super useful tweet thread! EU climate finance total for 2022 came out last week - some explanation here https://t.co/raqJt6IvUK
The EU has announced its total climate finance contributions to 'developing countries' for 2022:
EUR 28.5 billion public climate finance
EUR 11.9 billion mobilised private finance
https://t.co/KXuX5rt7ko
What do these numbers really mean?! Thread….
In previous yrs #EU has reported, but not communicated prominently on its mobilised private finance.
Putting out a number - EUR 11.9 billion - seems an effort to provide reassurance on the $100 billion.
To be credible the EU must take conservative approaches to counting it.

The EU and its 27 member states are the biggest providers of climate finance in the world 🌍
In 2022, they mobilised 28.5 billion💶 from public sources and an additional 11.9 billion 💶of private finance to support developing countries in the fight against climate change.
In 2022 54% of #EU#climatefinance went to adaptation or cross-cutting action
This remains the same as in 2021, with share for adaptation alone not clear
EU says for #COP28 it wants to be at forefront of ⬆️ adaptation finance: more action needed on this https://t.co/PmvbXL6lS7
