Restoration of natural disturbance regimes that create habitat heterogeneity should be considered. More generally, this study highlights the need for a community-level approach to conservation and the usefulness of basic ecological data for guiding management decisions.
How do species that compete for shared resources continue to coexist? How do small subordinate species persist with larger dominant competitors? This is important when conservation interventions (eg reintroduction/translocation) are necessary for the smaller species.
We tested for spatial & temporal partitioning btwn 6 species of wild rodents. We found:
-activity patterns aggregated temporally; segregated spatially
-larger species drive space use
-species-specific habitat associations; habitat heterogeneity is part of what enables coexistence
