Over the next couple of months, we'll explore how the McCracken women supported the men of the United Irishmen. In May @cliftonbelfast have various themed tours including one on BCS members who were involved with the United Irishmen. For more info visit: https://t.co/64DPNnU6jV
Mary Ann was an avid supporter of the United Irishmen & many of the men of her family were apart of the Society. She enjoyed reading the newspaper of the United Irishmen, the Northern Star, which included up-to-date info & contributions from the likes of Thomas Russell.
Since at least Oct 1796, women’s societies of the United Irishmen had been established. Interestingly Mary Ann never joined any of the female Societies as she believed that women should have been allowed to join the main groups. She writes to Henry Joy McCracken in March 1797:
Northern Arapaho girl wanted to wear her regalia beneath her gown to graduation.
The principal of her Wyoming high school told her, “If I let one minority do it, then I have to let the rest.”
Should Native graduates be allowed to wear their regalia, beneath their gowns?
The Holy See is willing to help enemies meet, so they may look each other in the eye and so people may be given back the dignity they deserve: the dignity of peace. With heart in hand, I say to the leaders of nations: let us meet; let us dialogue; let us negotiate!
Several of The Little Ships depart Teddington Lock this afternoon - on their way to Ramsgate. Next week over 60 plan to sail to Dunkirk 🇫🇷 to mark the 85th anniversary of Operation Dynamo. 🇬🇧 #Dunkirk85 @ForcesNews
Second World War veteran, Bernard, recalls the moment he received the telegram announcing the end of the war in Europe. He shared his story at our VE Day 80 event at the @Nat_Mem_Arb last week, where we proudly supported veterans with a Tea Party and Service of Remembrance.
Peace be with you all! This is the first greeting spoken by the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd. I would like this greeting of peace to resound in your hearts, in your families, and among all people, wherever they may be, in every nation and throughout the world.

Rural posties were often inspired by their routes to write poetry, paint, sketch or - as in the case of postman Idris Mathias - spend 17 years drawing a 60ft long map of his route along the River Teifi in Wales. See my @walkerspectacle post at https://t.co/89HSkX0C12
