"What a desolate place would be a world without a flower! It would be a face without a smile, a feast without a welcome. Are not flowers the stars of the earth, and are not our stars the flowers of heaven?".

"They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon."

"Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir,
Three bags full;
One for my master,
And one for my dame,
and one for the little boy
Who lives down the lane."

#FairyFriday 🌷✨ #TulipFairy 🌷🧚‍♀️
In English folklore, the Tulip Faeries once tended red blooms beside a hidden cottage. When a farmer tore them up for crops, the faeries vanished… and the red tulips with them.

Yet each full moon, they return—blossoming only on one old woman’s grave, a quiet tribute to a mother’s love and lingering magic. 🌕🧚‍♀️

Professor Janet Todd's 'definitive biography of Aphra Behn, the Royalist spy and pioneering Restoration dramatist, novelist and poet of the erotic', is one we can highly recommend! A fascinating life.

Custard the dragon had big sharp teeth,
And spikes on top of him and scales underneath,
Mouth like a fireplace, chimney for a nose,
And realio, trulio, daggers on his toes.

#BookologyThursday #WyrdWednesday #Celtic: ‘The Dagda came with his club of anger, and sang the following words at Teme Mara [the Plain of Murthemne, Co. Louth, between Dundalk and the Boyne]., i.e., the shelter, or covering of the sea:
Silent thy hollow head,

They weren't English and they weren't Latin. Burlingham described them as reminding him of the old nursery rhyme:

"There were three brothers over the sea.
Peri meri dixi domine
They sent three presents unto me
Petrum partrum paradisi tempore
Peri meri dixi domine."

She was dead before we missed her.
Willie's always up to tricks.
Ain't he cute? He's only six.

Whales have calves,
Cats have kittens,
Bears have cubs,
Bats have bittens*
Swans have cygnets,
Seals have puppies,
But guppies just have little guppies.

Ogden Nash

*Bitten is an invented rhyme. A baby bat is a ‘pup’
