I support meaningful tax relief for Florida families. But any proposal to eliminate or significantly reduce property taxes deserves a full and honest conversation about its impact on the services residents rely on every day.
Today, I sent a letter to Florida legislative leaders outlining my concerns and urging a balanced approach that protects both affordability and our communities.
Today’s news that Alligator Alcatraz may finally be shut down is long overdue. For months, thousands have been detained there in inhumane conditions without meaningful due process–while wasting millions of taxpayer dollars. It is time for dignity & accountability to be restored.
A dangerous step backward for our democracy. The Supreme Court’s ruling guts a core protection of the Voting Rights Act, but Miami-Dade will keep defending fair representation and the voices of our communities.
We just unveiled 8 new solar-powered charging areas at MIA, giving travelers and employees a shaded, comfortable space to recharge themselves and their devices, all powered by the sun. The future is bright in Miami-Dade! ☀️ ✈️
Tonight’s ruling is a victory for home rule and human dignity—and represents justice for those who faced unimaginable hardship. Grateful to all the advocates and residents who never stopped raising their voices and whose persistence made this outcome possible.
Residents asked us to protect arts and culture, community programs, parks, and services for our most vulnerable—and we listened. Today I presented an updated budget proposal that includes $66M in additional funding to restore important community priorities.
I welcome the court’s decision to halt construction at Alligator Alcatraz—an overdue and necessary step—as major concerns persist about conditions on site and environmental impacts. I’ll continue pushing for transparency and accountability to protect our community & environment.
Troubling news continues to come out of the state-run facility dubbed Alligator Alcatraz, all on land owned by Miami-Dade taxpayers and commandeered by the state. I am urgently following up on my request to @FLSERT for immediate access and more transparency.
My letter:
DEVELOPING: Miami-Dade’s mayor wants Florida to lift the secrecy around the immigration detention center in the Everglades and allow monitoring of the 3,000-bed compound hastily built on a seized county airport. https://t.co/EopzKbLOq4
I am gravely concerned about the alarming number of deaths and medical emergencies at immigration detention centers in Florida & nationwide. Today, I requested monitoring access to the state-run facility dubbed Alligator Alcatraz.
My letters to the state and federal government:
Today’s Supreme Court decision takes a wrecking ball to the bedrock value that if you are born in the United States, you are by birth a citizen. The ruling strikes at the heart of our American values and democratic ideals & creates dangerous uncertainty for so many. My statement:
The people of Miami-Dade have long stood for justice, freedom, and compassion. I’m urging Congress to act now and give TPS recipients permanent protection and a pathway to legal status. This is not just about immigration—it’s about dignity, economic stability & moral leadership.
I am deeply saddened by today’s Supreme Court ruling to uphold the decision to end humanitarian parole for some migrants – putting at risk over half a million people and thousands of Miami-Dade families who followed a legal process to escape persecution and build a better life.
This #MemorialDay, #MiamiDadeEM honors the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. We also recognize and stand with the families who carry their legacy of courage and dedication. Today, we remember their selflessness and express our deepest gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
