In Italy, the political party Lega has proposed a law to ban the wearing of face-covering garments, such as the burqa and niqab, in public spaces. The proposal argues that face covering is incompatible with Italian cultural values and the principles outlined in the Constitution and the Lisbon Treaty, which reject any form of submission or discrimination against women. Additionally, it introduces a new crime of "coercion to conceal the face," punishing those who force others to wear such garments through violence or threats with up to two years in prison and fines up to 30,000 euros. This penalty increases if the victim is a minor, woman, or disabled person, and those convicted would be barred from applying for citizenship. Of course, some on the Left are already calling it Islamophobia, but many Italian women believe that while freedom of religion is sacrosanct, freedom to oppress is not. Still, I don't believe it will pass.
