J.J. Thomson stuns the world at the Royal Institution by announcing the discovery of the electron - a particle over 1,800 times lighter than a proton.
He used a cathode ray tube and found the rays bent in electric and magnetic fields.
This showed they were made of tiny, negatively charged particles, electrons, much smaller than atoms. This was the first hint that atoms weren’t indivisible.
