Chip design takes long time, and now industry is moving fast. Apple bet on small local AI with NPU long ago since A11, kept iterating and failing relatively with Siri. Nvidia fully embraced tensor cores. Now Apple finally added Tensor in M5. So maybe the NPU is escalation of commitment. Or they have a good plan. It uses less power compared to the GPU. Maybe they have small future models running in it.
