Recently I was hired as chief solution architect by a small startup.
They're paying me more than 2 crore a year.
To make the system “future ready”.
To design for the scale they won’t have even in 10 years.
Day one, I said, “The monolith is holding us back.”
Everyone nodded.
Monoliths are bad.
They are big. Big things are scary.
Therefore bad.
I drew a box on whiteboard.
The box was the monolith.
Then I drew many boxes.
The many boxes were microservices.
Each box had arrows.
Arrows mean architecture.a
The more arrows, the more senior you look.
I added Kafka.
We didn’t need it.
But Netflix uses Kafka.
Netflix is successful.
Therefore Kafka.
We now have decoupled everything.
Decoupled systems fail independently.
That’s resilience.
Their deployment used to be one button.
Now it’s 47 huge pipelines.
Each service has its own CI/CD.
CI stands for Continuous Issues.
CD stands for Can’t Deploy.
This is DevOps maturity.
Latency went up.
Costs and Incidents went up.
But system is complex now.
Top management loves complexity.
My contract was extended.
Two more years.
For “architectural vision”.
The system is now future-ready.
The future hasn’t arrived yet.
And when it does
We’ll have to build again from scratch.
But I’ll be long gone.
This WFH culture is such a blessing for corporate people...❤️
A few months back, my dad had a heart attack. Without thinking much about holidays or work, I went to my hometown.
I managed his medications and stayed there with my mom and dad for almost 2 months.🧿❤️
Because in situations like these, no matter how good the doctor is, a patient recovers better when they have their own people around them.
This was possible only because my company allowed WFH, and my manager was supportive enough to let me work from home for 2 straight months.
I could be with my parents when they needed me the most.
That wouldn't have been possible with many other jobs.
This b@stard, Sanjay Dixit, doxxed a minor.
He publicly shared her personal details, purposely misrepresented her age, and exposed her to targeted harassment, putting her safety at risk.
Every opposition party MUST file an FIR in their respective states ensuring Sanjay spends rest of his life running from state to state and in between courts to courts.
Doxxing a minor is not "free speech." It's a serious act that can endanger a child's safety. Sanjay must face strict legal consequences.
I was driving when I noticed a traffic camera flash as I passed. I knew I wasn't speeding, so I figured it had to be a mistake.
Just to be sure, I turned around and drove past the same spot again, this time even slower. Flash!
Curious now, I went around again, driving at a snail's pace. Flash!
At this point, I thought it was hilarious, so I passed by two more times, each slower than the last. Flash, flash!
I couldn't stop laughing. I was convinced the camera was broken.
Two weeks later, five tickets arrived in the my mail...
Every single one was for driving without a seat belt. 😂
A perfectly triangular lake has three kingdoms along its three sides.
The first kingdom is rich and powerful, filled with wealthy, prosperous people.
The second kingdom is more humble, but still enjoys its fair share of wealth and influence.
The third kingdom is poor and struggling, with barely enough resources to maintain an army.
Eventually, the three kingdoms go to war over control of the lake, which has become a valuable resource.
The first kingdom sends 100 of its finest knights, clad in the best armor money can buy, each accompanied by a personal squire.
The second kingdom sends 50 knights, equipped with fine leather armor and supported by several dozen squires of their own.
The third kingdom can only send a single knight — an elderly warrior long past his prime — along with his faithful squire.
The night before the great battle, the knights of the first kingdom drink and celebrate late into the night.
The knights of the second kingdom aren’t quite as wealthy, but they still have enough grog to keep the festivities going well into the evening.
In the third camp, things are much quieter.
The squire takes a rope and throws it over the branch of a tall tree, making a noose. He hangs a cooking pot from it, fills it with stew, and shares a humble dinner with the old knight.
The next morning, disaster strikes.
The knights of the first two kingdoms are too hungover to fight.
The old knight from the third kingdom is simply too old and weary to rise from his bed.
So instead, the squires from all three kingdoms march into battle.
The fighting lasts all day and well into the night. When the dust finally settles, only one squire remains standing: the squire from the third kingdom.
And that just goes to show you that: The squire of the high pot and noose is equal to the sum of the squires of the other two sides.
Not everyone shamelessly setup a screen and watch a match of the opponents sitting in your own dugouts and hotels the way RCB did in 2024.
We believe in our own results.
This 2024 comeback was counted as greatest by only 13-14 years old RCB fans because they weren’t present when KKR and MI made the comeback in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Julius Caesar and Marcus Brutus were at an airport.
Brutus: “Which is our boarding gate, Caesar?”
Caesar: “A-2, Brutus.”
Brutus: “And what time is the flight, Caesar?”
Caesar: “8:02, Brutus.”
Brutus: “By the way, I have sandwiches. Do you want one, Caesar?”
Caesar: “Ate two, Brutus.”
Brutus: “This is an unusual paper size for a ticket. What size is it,
Caesar?”
Caesar: “A2, Brutus.”
Brutus (thinking): “This guy is really beginning to get on my nerves. One of these days I’m going to have to kill him.”
Boss: Team, from today we need everyone to reduce electricity usage in the office. Please switch off anything unnecessary.
Employee: Absolutely, sir. We fully support the initiative.
Boss: Great. Small actions save the company a lot of money.
Employee: That’s why I unplugged the office Wi-Fi router every afternoon.
Boss: You WHAT?!
Employee: Well… internet uses electricity too. I figured no Wi-Fi = maximum savings.
Boss: The entire finance department lost access to the system for 3 hours!
Employee: Exactly, sir. Computers without internet also consume less power.
Boss: That’s not what I meant!
Employee: I was just following leadership vision with commitment.
Boss: Please plug the router back in immediately.
Employee: Should I reconnect the servers too, or are we still saving aggressively?
Summer vs Winter is a meangingless debate.
You feel too cold in winter, you can always wear more clothes. Use a thicker blanket. Wear a jacket. Go for a jog. Light a bonfire.
Summer offers no such escape. There is literally nothing you can do except wait for monsoons.
True story: my five-year-old son came out of school yesterday with the biggest smile on his face. He jumps in the car, looks right at me, and asks, “Do you want a brownie?”
I said, “Yeah, I’d love a brownie — that sounds delicious.”
Then he handed me this.
I’m a very proud dad today.
I don't want to speak ill of the departed but I think the Late Dr. Manmohan Singh must be blamed for this. No one has been at the helm of running the country after him after all. I guess we could demand accountability from Mr. Rahul Gandhi but he keeps denying that he is running the country.
Jimmy Neesham takes 3 wickets in a batsman-dominated match.
English commentators:
Great tactical bowling, mixing pace and swing intelligently.
Hindi commentators:
Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy… aaja aaja aaja!
