The German government is already messing this thing up, there’s no other way to put it.

The deadline has passed. Germany and Europe must now outline concrete consequences.

If European decisionmakers wish to await the outcome of the Istanbul offer, it must be done in the context of a clear threat that any further delay in Russia accepting a ceasefire will trigger additional measures. But it cannot be retroactively framed as the condition for sanctions imposition after the initial threat has lapsed without consequences.

If German and European leaders intend to wait for U.S. alignment before announcing a sanctions package, they should never have issued premature threats they are unwilling to act on, if need be unilaterally.

Merz is about to lose his credibility in week one of his term. I need CDU party leaders to understand how incredibly dangerous and self-defeating this is.

— European leaders are ready to wait until after the proposed Zelenskiy-Putin meeting in Turkey on Thursday to push Trump for sanctions on Russia.

— In conversations between US and European officials today, it was clear the Americans wanted to give the Thursday talks a chance before increasing pressure on Putin, sources say.

— If Putin declines the meeting or Russia does not agree an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Istanbul, Europe will urge Trump to follow through with his ultimatum to sanction Moscow.

— Trump’s plan on Russia has been unclear over the last 48 hours.

— On Saturday, European leaders thought they’d secured an agreement from Trump to back a 30-day ceasefire starting Monday, with US and European sanctions on Russia if Putin didn’t agree.

— But Trump didn’t publicly endorse the timeline and on Sunday instead urged Zelenskiy to meet Putin, an intervention the Europeans were not expecting.

— In private today, US officials were unclear if they’re still ready to sanction Russia if attacks continue or what they’ll do if Putin doesn’t attend on Thursday, European officials said.
