It’s frustrating to pitch an interview, review, or feature on a Filipino film and receive no reply, only to later see the publication run the story with the same angles and questions. When will those of us from the Global South get to tell our own stories through these channels?

‘‘DI AKO MAKAPANIWALA THAT SOMEONE CAN HAVE 58 PEOPLE MURDERED’
The producers of “58th,” the Philippine submission to the Best Documentary Feature Film category of the Oscars, recently recalled the struggles of bringing the film to the big screen.
Directed by Carl Joseph Papa and produced by GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures, “58th” tells the story of photojournalist Reynaldo “Bebot” Momay, whose body was never found following the 2009 Maguindanao Massacre and whose family continues to fight for his recognition as the tragedy’s 58th victim. The film combines animation with archival footage to revisit one of the darkest chapters in Philippine history.
During a recent talkback, GMA Network Senior Vice President for Public Affairs and Executive Vice President for GMA Pictures Nessa Valdellon recalled the frustration of initially being unable to secure a permit to exhibit the film.
“Kasi umiiyak ako sa office nun, 'di ako makapaniwala that someone can have, like, 58 people murdered and then we’re not allowed to come out with a film because baka kasuhan yung government body ng mga Ampatuan for sub judice. I was admittedly angry, but we’re here now and MTRCB was kind enough to rethink their decision.
“And I’m so happy they allowed us to do this kind — ito yung pinaka-maikli na permit to exhibit na nakita pa namin. Normally, five years ang binibigay. We have up to Sept. 23. But we’re still very grateful.”
“58th” was eventually granted an R-16 rating and a limited permit to exhibit until September 23, 2026. The film is now also setting its sights on the 99th Academy Awards, with the Film Academy of the Philippines supporting its campaign for Best Documentary Feature Film consideration.
“58th” has screenings at Cinema 2 of Shangri-La Plaza today, September 22, 2026, with the last screening at 8 PM. | via @Natspeaking

I wish for a Filipino dub. I think it would make it 10x hilarious for Pinoys. And they should rename Bungi's mother to Janice, para anak siya ni Janice. 🙂
