PPA RECOMMENDS DEFERRAL OF SCHOOL SHOOTING DRILL

The Philippine Psychiatric Association (PPA) and the Philippine Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (PSCAP) in a statement called for the deferment of the DepEd’s active shooter drill scheduled on Tuesday, August 25.

“Current evidence does not show that these simulations reduce casualties or prevent incidents, while multiple studies demonstrate that they can cause lasting psychological harm across groups,” the statement read.

According to the PPA and the PSCAP, rather than conducting such drills, schools can conduct tabletop exercises which teach students what to do in such scenarios, which “builds coordination and preparedness without frightening children.”
