A cold but dry day yesterday for collecting soil samples from 240 10cmx10cm microsites by Shan Lou and Raj Whitlock (Liverpool University). @RajWhitlock@ShanLuo6@Andrew_P_Askew
UK planning policy safeguards 'irreplaceable habitats' but the term is often applied narrowly to ancient woodland/veteran trees. A wider definition is hidden away in NPPF glossary (https://t.co/qly2iHxZXR) but why doesn't it mention ancient grassland?

Finally got back to resurvey at Cressbrookdale NNR, Derbyshire, repeating a survey first done in 2008, and found some familiar friends, including bird's foot sedge Carex ornithopoda, and a stand of melancholy thistle Cirsium heterophyllum extending c. 15 m through the grassland

This issue seems even more pertinent now, and our diagram still extremely relevant
