That was one country. One policy decision. Reversed within months.
The Hormuz closure is now imposing the same shock on the entire Asian continent simultaneously, and nobody can reverse it because the strait is mined, uninsured, and unescorted.
India is running fertilizer plants at 60 percent capacity after capping gas allocation at 70 percent of historical averages. Delhi formally asked Beijing for emergency urea on March 12. Beijing said nothing and banned its own phosphate exports through August. The fertilizer subsidy bill has been revised to 1.86 lakh crore rupees, over 40 percent of India’s entire subsidy budget, with urea still sold at 242 rupees per bag against international prices many times higher. Stockpiles of 17.7 million tonnes provide a genuine near-term buffer. But Kharif season prep starts in May. If Skymet’s 60 percent probability of below-normal monsoon materializes at the same time, India faces a food production crisis of a severity not experienced since the emergency that originally prompted the Green Revolution.
Bangladesh has shut four to five of its six major urea factories after gas rationing triggered by the Qatar LNG cutoff. Boro rice season, which produces over half the country’s annual grain, is underway with almost no domestic nitrogen supply. Stockpiles measured in weeks. The garment sector generating 85 percent of export earnings faces simultaneous cotton and petrochemical disruption. Projected yield loss: 20 to 40 percent.
Pakistan’s gas constraints are curtailing domestic fertilizer production while debt service consumes an estimated 81 percent of tax revenue. Every dollar spent on emergency urea imports competes with every dollar of debt repayment in a fiscal framework the IMF describes as carrying high near-term sovereign stress risk. Projected wheat yield loss: 10 to 20 percent.
Sri Lanka itself faces 15 to 30 percent rice yield risk from the same import dependence that caused the 2021 catastrophe. The difference: in 2021 it was a self-inflicted wound that could be reversed by a policy change. In 2026 it is an externally imposed disruption that requires a naval coalition to resolve, and that coalition does not exist.
Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines face granular urea above $700 per tonne for spring deliveries. These four countries sit at the heart of global food production. Southeast Asia produces 68 percent of the world’s aquaculture, dependent on soybean meal that is now repricing as the entire protein chain tightens. Projected yield and food inflation impact across the region: 10 to 25 percent.

The yield response to nitrogen is not linear. It is quadratic. Wealthy nations operating above the agronomic optimum lose 2 to 5 percent. Asian and African nations operating on the steep ascending curve lose 15 to 40 percent from the same percentage supply disruption.
The crisis does not distribute evenly. It distributes along the exact fault lines of development. The mathematics guarantee that the nations least equipped to absorb the shock absorb the most damage.
Sri Lanka in 2021 was the warning. The world watched a single country lose 40 percent of its rice in one season and treated it as an aberration.
It was a preview.

Indians were making soft cheeses like paneer over 4400 years ago by using perforated vessels placed inside a big pot like the ones pictured from Rakhigarhi (2300 BCE) to filter out whey from boiled milk. The study “Compound specific isotope analysis of lipid residues provides the earliest direct evidence of dairy product processing in South Asia.” (Chakraborty, K.S., Slater, G.F., Miller, https://t.co/iTCYsu9epW. et al. , Sci Rep 10, 16095, 2020) analyzed lipid residues in unglazed ceramic vessels and found evidence of dairy fats on pottery fragments.
The study showed that as far back as 2600 BCE, Indians in Kotada Bhadli, Gujarat, were processing dairy inside pottery vessels, based on lipid isotope analysis that clearly distinguishes milk fats from meat fats. This means milk was not just consumed fresh but was heated, stored, and transformed into other dairy forms. The authors note that a previous lipid residue study on a perforated vessel from Nausharo had yielded similar lipid residues. This means that Indians likely used perforated inserts to separate whey while making acid-set fresh cheeses like paneer over 4400 years ago. These perforated strainers have been found at multiple Indian sites of that era.
The milk was likely curdled using sour yogurt which is exactly how the Indian recipe is still made today. Even today in Bengal the traditional technique uses clay pots just as we did thousands of years ago.
The Portuguese version traditionally uses animal (calf or lamb) rennet to set the cheese.

I studied in Chennai in a government-aided free Tamil medium school funded by the late Shri Jaigopal Garodia-ji. He was born in poverty in Sujangarh, Rajasthan and never went to school due to poverty. At age 10, he migrated to Kolkata in search of a livelihood, and eventually migrated to Chennai and found business success. He donated all his wealth to his charitable foundation that has funded education generously. A lot of schools in Chennai, particularly schools that poor and lower middle class kids attend, have been funded by him. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude.
My goal today is to urge the entrepreneurs to invest in long term patient R&D projects and think of it as the continuation of the educational and social service to the nation that entrepreneurs from Rajasthan are so famous for.
