She spent 20 years as a bonded slave.

Then she spent 25 years freeing nearly 4,000 others.

Veeru Kohli. Jhudo, Sindh. 1964.
Hindu. Scheduled caste. Daughter of a landless Hari agricultural labourer.

Married at 16 into a family already bonded to a landlord over a loan that was never settled.
No matter how much they worked, the debt never went down.
It only grew.

Children beaten. Husband assaulted. Daughters threatened.
Every movement monitored by armed guards.

In 1998 she ran.

Got on a bus. Reached a safe village. Found her brothers. Collected money from family and friends to pay off the debt.

The landlord doubled it. Refused to release her family.

She did not go home. She went to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan in Hyderabad.

The HRCP sent her to a senior police official in Umerkot.
Police accompanied her back to the landlord's property.
Inside: 40 people in bonded captivity.

They were freed that day.

She was free for the first time in 20 years.

She did not rest.

For the next 25 years she walked into feudal lords' private jails across Sindh and walked people out.
Nearly 4,000 Haris and brick kiln workers freed.
Muslim and Hindu both.
It did not matter to her.

She once removed her own silver bangles and gave them to a needy family so they could buy food.
In Hindu tradition, removing bangles is a sign of widowhood.
She gave them anyway.

2006. Indian activist Nirmala Deshpande invited her to speak at the World Social Forum in India.
2009. Los Angeles. The Frederick Douglass Freedom Award. 500 candidates. 26 countries. She won.
2013. She contested the general elections against PPP heavyweight Sharjeel Memon. She got 5,000 votes from a mud hut in Hyderabad with no electricity and no running water.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said on her death: Her struggle inspired scores of labour rights activists not only in Pakistan but also abroad.

She died on 31st October 2023. In Tharparkar. Aged 59.

Buried in Jhudo. The same village where she was born into bondage.

She came home free.
