Regardless of one’s profession, people need to read more. Read within your field, read outside of your field, read fiction, read long form journalism, push yourself to read.
Too many people remain functionally illiterate and ignorant of the world despite abundant opportunity.
As we are out here doing our Genealogy and looking at old census records and history, it's mostly written in cursive. There are at least 3 different decades of youth who don't know how to write or read cursive. What the schools won't teach, you better have your children learn it from somewhere else. We've heard enough talk about interregional support in travel, agriculture, etc. I'm certain we can find hundreds of UWI citations on the topic. It's time we strengthen our interdependence and local production. We can't depend on the fruits hanging over from another man's yard.
The US dockworkers strike is another wake-up call for the Caribbean since the pandemic. We already have hurricanes to prepare for each year, but this situation is unprecedented. Maybe it will lead to the ease of trade and cooperation in the region.
