Treating the Manusmriti as if it functions as the active Constitution of Hindu India ignores both historical reality and modern law:

It Is Not a Holy Book: The Manusmriti is a regional, historical legal code authored and amended by multiple humans over centuries; not a divine mandate. 99.9% of practicing Hindus have never read it. The true spiritual foundation of Hinduism rests on the Vedas, Upanishads, and Bhagavad Gita, which focus on the immortal self (Atman) beyond gender or caste.

A Colonial Construct: The British elevated the text in 1794 via William Jones's translation to build a centralized "Hindu Law." Historically, Indian practice relied on diverse texts (Yājñavalkya, Nārada, Gautama), regional customs, and local traditions.

Settled Law: Independent India replaced ancient codices decades ago through modern statutes like the Hindu Marriage Act (1955) and Hindu Succession Act (1956).

The underlying double standard remains clear:
Critiques weaponize problematic verses while ignoring passages like Manusmriti 3.56 ("Where women are honored, the gods rejoice").

Meanwhile, scriptures in other traditions that explicitly claim to be the unalterable word of God; containing deeply regressive derogatory guidelines on women - receive a pass to protect vote bank arithmetic. For instance , Sahih al-Bukhari texts describe women as forming the majority in Hell and explicitly rank a woman's witness testimony as half that of a man's.

1, Timothy 2:12 explicitly forbids women from teaching or having authority over men, ordering total silence.

Furthermore, religion derived personal laws from other faiths continue to have real legal consequences for women in India today, yet they rarely attract the same political hostility.

Hinduism has survived for millennia because it is self-correcting, continuously adapting its societal norms through time (Yuga Dharma).

The mature place for the Manusmriti is on the bookshelf of intellectual history—not at the center of a motivated campaign over legal questions modern India settled long ago.

Selective critique isn't reform; it's just cynical politics.
