BREAKING: Meta has announced it will build its first major Canadian data centre in Alberta, marking one of the largest private-sector technology investments in the province’s history.

The AI-focused facility will have a planned capacity of 1 gigawatt and is expected to cost about $9 billion, with construction expected to take two to three years.

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, including approximately 3,000 construction jobs and 300 permanent positions.

The Alberta government says the investment will provide economic benefits for the province, support new energy and grid infrastructure, and include funding for local infrastructure such as roads and water systems.

Meta says the Alberta facility is part of its global expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure as demand for AI services continues to grow.
