The Restaurant Reservation - A Latter-day Saint Parable.
Situation 1-
Peter: “Hey I got you a reservation to this wonderful restaurant, do you want to go? You don’t have to, if you don’t want to.”
Friend #1 - “Hey, that’s really thoughtful of you, I don’t know if this is really my thing but I’ll check it out. Thanks!”
Peter: “Cool! Let’s meet up at 7 pm.”
<<Later after the end of the meal.>>
Friend #1 - “Wow! That was amazing! Thank you for thinking of me and including me. Thanks for being a good friend.”
Peter: “Absolutely! I thought you might want to consider it and am glad you found joy in your dining experience!
<<High fives each other and leave the restaurant.>>
Situation 2-
Peter: “Hey I got you a reservation to this wonderful restaurant, do you want to go? You don’t have to, if you don’t want to.”
Friend #2 - “Hey, that’s really thoughtful of you, but that kind of food really isn’t my thing, but I appreciate your consideration.”
Peter: “Hey, cool no worries! You do you!”
Situation 3-
Peter: “Hey I got you a reservation to this wonderful restaurant, do you want to go? You don’t have to, if you don’t want to.”
“Friend” #3 - “WHAT?!? How are dare you offer me a reservation to THAT restaurant?!?! Don’t you know that they don’t serve food I like for my special diet?!! That’s so wrong! By making this reservation you are MAKING me go there! That’s so evil!!!”
Peter: “No worries! I was just thinking about you. No obligation, it’s just a reservation. I only offer it because I’ve know this place makes me happy, and although I’m not perfect or a mind reader, I care about you and thought you might like it.”.
“Friend” #3 -“Well, if you were really my friend you’d know better!”
<<End of situations.>>
If only it was as simple as that.
What year did his father become a mason?
What year was the Book of Mormon published?
What year were the ordinances introduced at the time the Kirtland Temple?
What are the differences between these ordinances and those in Nauvoo?
How are the Nauvoo ordinances similar and different from the Masonic ceremony? How about the liturgy?
How ancient is the Masonic ceremony?
Tell me more about the Temple liturgy found within the Book of Mormon and how and why they overlap with ancient writings and liturgies found after the publishing of the Book of Mormon?
Why is there an overlap of these 3rd century A.D. documents with Latter-day Saint theology and rituals?
How does the liturgy found in the Book of Mormon, presentation of the endowment match the narrative of Adam and Eve of several ancient traditions all of which were not available or discovered until after then being presented in the 1830’s and 1840’s?
@Abaraxoid Hey, I don’t know what is going on in your personal life right now or what heartache or difficulties you are experiencing but despite our online banter, I really hope the best for you even if you think the worst of my beliefs and faith. Best of luck to you brother and God bless.
@Abaraxoid@Manhattva@Kurt_Steiner Bravo. Very bold of you to own your own behavior like that. I’m sure with a little bit of repentance, Christ will forgive you.
@EWErickson Yeah, no. Try again. That’s more like Christianity post 328 A.D. not Christianity 101.
Christianity 101 (A.D.) was Pre-Nicene Creed which was faith in Lord Jesus Christ, Repentance, Baptism, and receiving the Holy Ghost.
@justin_hart Honestly, I care less about the “paid clergy” discussion, but I’m more concerned about what “paid clergy” does to either draw people closer or further away from Christ with their rhetoric and examples.
I had a coworker who is JW. I have a healthy respect for his commitment to honesty, his work ethic, and intelligence. Although we differ greatly in points of doctrine and beliefs, I respect him and his beliefs.
If he considers himself a Christian, and his behavior matches the character of Jesus Christ (or is doing his best trying to do so) then I have no reason nor authority to deny his claim.
I am not a gatekeeper of God‘s name or His relationship with His children.
And who were those people @Abaraxoid ? Was it the “publicans and sinners”? The “apostate” Samaritans? Or those who used their religion to outcast all those who didn’t seem to fit the mold of a good religious person? Sound familiar?
The same spirit that possessed the Sadducees and Pharisees to call Christ possessed of a devil is the same spirit that persecutes His followers and His church now.
The spirit of persecution does not belong in the body of Christ and if you have it, you are not of His body.
@Manhattva@Kurt_Steiner Many so-called Christians really do Him (and themselves) an injustice with their discipleship.
Can you just imagine Jesus Christ acting the way they do with the woman at the well or the women caught in adultery? It’s shameful.
@Suicideofthewes Some of my least favorite politicians are Romney and Reid, and I’m a Latter-Day Saint! (Let’s be honest though most politicians are horrible though.)
@SamH0816@GrandpaJoeSux@MostlyPeaceful I wonder why the natives in the Americas mistakenly thought Hernando Cortez was Quetzalcoatl - the white civilized savior… It’s probably nothing…
I now recognize you as a Mormon! Finally there IS such thing as a Mormon Church and @BenZeisloft is the founder of it!
You see everyone - until this time there has never been a “Mormon Church” - but as of Ben’s post there is and he is the founder of it.
So many people have been mistaken that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Mormon Church were the same but no longer. Ben like others is a Trinitarian Christian which is different from the Godhead Christians of the New Testament (a-la 1st Century to 3rd Century Christians and the Latter-day Saints) but that’s a-okay with me because no one is a gatekeeper of Christianity or Church of Mormon.
I am glad you’re Mormon now Ben, shall we work on our ecumenicalism to see how we can live better lives as children of God, or do you feel like gatekeeping that term as well?
No offense but how many Muslims do you know, grew up with, or are friends with now?
How many religious conversations have you personally had with them? Because EVERY Muslim I know (both Shia and Sunni) explicitly told me that they do not believe in the Divinity of Jesus as the Son of God, His Atonement, His literal resurrection, and Jesus Christ is not God which is the backbone of Christianity but that He was an important prophet.
This is quite different than Latter-day Saints who believe all of these things but do not share the extra biblical declarations of the creeds, however Latter-days Saints also have extra biblical beliefs as well but claim these beliefs come through restored Priesthood authority directly from God through Jesus Christ and resurrected Prophets and Apostles like Peter, James, John, John the Baptist, and Old Testament prophets.
