When the oil prices collapsed and things got tight for my survey company in 2008, I found myself with a balance of about $15,000 in GST owed that I didn't have the means to immediately pay.

I did pay it off eventually but CRA was on me weekly like a pack of hounds and I paid a shitload in late charges and interest. I admit it was my own fault and I shouldn't have let myself get so vulnerable with taxes owing while in an industry with volatile ups and downs based on commodity prices. Like a good Albertan oil guy, I always assumed the next invoice would cover the next tax bill.

While the government loves to crack down on little operators like me, they turn quite the blind eye to larger companies.

How is it that I was the focus of mass pressure for owing $15k while an airline can run up nearly $70 million in unpaid GST over years?

Canada is broken.
