What I am about to tell you may be hard to hear.
The people who told you to “be a man” were not wrong, stupid, or engaging in “toxic masculinity.”
They were right and they loved you.
It is an uncomfortable truth that, as a man, you will be simultaneously unwanted and needed. Your pains will be better left hidden, your complaints unheard, your wounds covered. Yes, the march of progress will publicly call on you to be more open and vulnerable, but will sneer in disgust if you do so. Do not blame the people or judge them harshly, it is in our nature to expect men to be stoic and strong. The enlightened “progress” will not dispel this. This is fine. Keep going.
In a world where responsibilities are being abdicated by every party, institution, and individual at an increasingly rapid pace, you will find a multitude of burdens to take upon yourself. They will not be thrust upon you; YOU will find the responsibilities unattended, the posts abandoned, the ground ceded and you will reflexively, instinctively, naturally take them up.
It is in your nature. Problems need to be solved, boundaries secured, shelters mended. You will not be able to resist. This is fine. Keep going.
This will not always be welcomed. Sometimes people just want to hear “There, there. It will be alright” and be left to their tears but you will likely quietly fix what needs to be mended anyway, heal what needs to be cured. Your life will be a path of countless tiny restorations, the vast majority of which will go unnoticed. This is fine. Keep going.
You will need to be ready though. A sober mind and prepared body will be a daily requirement. Drunk? You leave everything you hold dear unguarded. Poorly equipped or out of shape? Your body will not be ready when the crises arise, and they will. Fire, fang, and foe are creeping back into our periphery after a long peace afforded by the men who came before you. The reason you never saw pictures of your great grandfather in shorts and sandals is that the wolf was at the wood line and the fires of cities burned just over the horizon. He knew and he was ready. Look down at your outfit. Are you ready to react in this moment, or would a sudden ungraceful movement gash open your shin and tear off your toe nail? When people need help, they look to men in pants and boots. You will not live as long as women, likely because you will be hyper-vigilant for most of your life. It will never be easy to rest. The stress will take its quiet, grim toll. This too is fine. It is your lot, your nature, your virtue. You need to be on always. This is fine. Keep going.
The world needs you, likely more now than ever. Do not give in to easy comforts or despair. Find instead the roles, positions, and land that has been abdicated and abandoned.
It will not be hard to find these.
It will not be hard to find your strength.
Keep going.
I’m not in the best shape but better than 95% of my friends in their 40’s.
Consistency is key. Won’t happen overnight but over years.
It’s easy, pick up heavy stuff over and over until the muscle is tired, rest, do it again.
