For months, California voters have been talking less about who they want to support for governor and more about who can survive the state’s top-two primary system.
Under California’s system, all candidates appear on the same primary ballot and only the top two candidates advance to the general election, regardless of party. In crowded races, that can create fears of vote-splitting and “spoiler” candidates, especially when several candidates appeal to similar voters.
As a result, voters are often pressured to vote “strategically” based on polling instead of voting for the candidate they actually support. Candidates are encouraged to drop out early. Entire campaigns can become focused on gaming the system instead of building broad voter support.
It’s no surprise that more people are questioning whether the top-two system is really giving voters the representation and choices they deserve.
But the answer is not going back to low-turnout plurality primaries where candidates can advance with only a small share of the vote.
The better solution is Ranked Choice Voting.
Ranked Choice Voting lets voters rank candidates in order of preference, reduces vote-splitting, and helps ensure winners are supported by a true majority of voters.
More voice. More choice. Better elections.

Ranked choice voting will be used in primaries this month in Maine & DC.
In other states, crowded primaries or primary runoffs will deliver unrepresentative results – problems that would be solved w/ RCV.

Thank you to every incredible volunteer who has helped grow this movement over the last several years and never stopped believing in a better future for Michigan elections. Our movement is only as strong as the people behind it, and after hearing from so many volunteers this month, it’s clear that our movement is stronger than ever.
Throughout the month, we’ve been highlighting the amazing work our volunteers did at last month’s Democratic Nominating Convention. Today, we’re hearing from Bill, Amanda, and Brad, just a few of the dedicated people working every day to bring Ranked Choice Voting to Michigan.
Every volunteer has their own reason for supporting Ranked Choice Voting, but they all share one common goal: giving voters a stronger voice in our democracy. We’d love for you to be part of it too.
Ranked Choice Voting gives voters more voice, more choice, and ensures voters only have to vote once by allowing them to rank candidates in order of preference. It encourages participation, increases turnout, and helps make sure every vote counts.

Congratulations to the team at Michiganders for Money Out of Politics on officially turning in petitions today to qualify for the November ballot.
This was a huge undertaking powered by volunteers across Michigan who believe our democracy works best when voters have a stronger voice and big money has less influence over our politics.
At Rank MI Vote, we were proud to support this effort alongside so many dedicated grassroots advocates fighting for meaningful political reform in Michigan.
Real democracy reform takes coalition building, persistence, and people willing to do the hard work. Today was a big step forward.
More voice. More choice. More power for voters.
Mop Up Michigan says it is filing 562,068 voter signatures for potential November ballot proposal to ban political spending by regulated utilities like DTE and Consumers and large state contractors like Blue Cross.
Problem: Voters are fed up with our broken politics.
Solution: #RankedChoiceVoting rewards politicians who solve problems for all of us.

💬 Rank MI Vote is a cross-partisan movement working to bring Ranked Choice Voting to Michigan.
With Ranked Choice Voting, candidates are encouraged to build broader support, reach out to more voters, and focus on how they can best represent their communities instead of relying on negative campaigning. That’s what makes this reform better for voters and healthier for democracy.
Ranked Choice Voting gives people stronger voices, more meaningful choices, and leaders who earn majority support.

As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, this Memorial Day carries special meaning.
Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives defending the freedoms and democratic ideals upon which our country was built. From the Revolutionary War to today, generations of Americans answered the call to serve and made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
At Rank MI Vote, we believe the best way to honor their legacy is to continue strengthening and protecting the democratic values they fought to defend and ensuring every voter has a meaningful voice in our democracy.
This Memorial Day, we remember and honor their sacrifice.

Last month at the Democratic Party Nominating Convention, we met even more passionate volunteers working to bring Ranked Choice Voting to Michigan. Everyone comes to this movement for their own reasons, but we’re united by one core belief: voters deserve a stronger voice in our democracy, and we’d love for you to join us.
Ranked Choice Voting gives voters more voice, more choice, and ensures voters and delegates only have to vote once. It encourages participation, increases turnout, and helps make sure every voice is heard.
Bringing Ranked Choice Voting to Michigan isn’t a question of if, it’s a question of when. Together, we can build a better democracy.

Yesterday, Mike Duggan ended his independent bid for Governor, warning that he could become a “spoiler” in the race.
“I got into this race to try to change our politics, not to be a spoiler.”
That moment highlights a deeper problem in our elections.
When candidates feel pressure to step aside and voters are told not to “waste” their vote, the system isn’t working the way it should. It’s forcing choices instead of reflecting them, and it can lead to winners who don’t have majority support.
We have a choice in how we respond:
We can keep an outdated system that limits competition and pressures candidates out of the race, or we can make a simple upgrade that lets every candidate run and every voter express their true preferences without fear.
Ranked Choice Voting does exactly that. It eliminates the spoiler effect, ensures majority-supported winners, and rewards candidates who build broad support.
And this isn’t a new idea for Duggan. Back in 1980, he wrote his senior thesis on the need for Ranked Choice Voting in presidential primaries, recognizing the same problem we’re seeing play out today.
As Benjamin Franklin understood, democracy isn’t something we set and forget. It’s something we strengthen over time.
More voice. More choice. A better democracy for Michigan.

Rank MI Vote strongly supports Senate Bills 961, 962, 963, and 964, the Michigan Voting Rights Act, to strengthen voting rights and protect democracy here in Michigan.
SB 961 includes Proportional Ranked Choice Voting as a remedy for voting rights violations, recognizing that voters deserve systems that lead to stronger representation and broader voter voice.
As protections under the federal Voting Rights Act continue to be weakened, Michigan has the opportunity to lead by protecting voter power at the state level.
Thank you to Senator Darrin Camilleri (@darrincamilleri) and the many Senate co sponsors working to move this legislation forward.
More voice. Better representation.

Rank MI Vote is a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocating for Ranked Choice Voting in Michigan.
Hours of waiting, uncertainty, and what if's… all because there was no backup plan. 🗳️
One of our volunteers, Grace reflects on a long, unpredictable day at the Michigan Democratic Convention—where delegates weren’t sure if they’d have to vote all over again. Many had to leave early, unsure if their voices would still count.
That’s the problem.
Ranked Choice Voting means no wasted votes, no secondary elections, and no guesswork—just one ballot that always counts.
More voice. More choice. One vote.
