Carson Benge on his chance of making the Mets roster:

Had the #Mets retained Pete Alonso for the same contract, here is what the NY Beat reporters would’ve focused on with their coverage:
They’d have destroyed Cohen and Stearns for bringing back the same nucleus responsible for the “historic 2025 collapse”, especially if they hadn’t traded Nimmo & still lost Diaz:
In addition to Alonso & Nimmo not fitting Stearns’ goal for improving “run prevention”, they’d have criticized Alonso for key offensive metrics that were also clearly on the decline:
Have you ever seen them focus on the positive things a player does?
ANY PLAYER AT ALL?
Soto almost puts up a 40/40 season -> they obsess over the collapse, no “Soto shuffle”, locker room drama, % of solo HR…
$30M AAV for a RHB power hitter who CAN’T HIT LHP:
Last 3 Years vs LHP:
2023 -> .224 BA | 24% K-Rate | .859 OPS
2024 -> .237 BA | 23% K-Rate | .803 OPS
2025 -> .227 BA | 31% K-Rate | .729 OPS
2025 -> OPS declined 130 points despite hitting behind JUAN SOTO & LINDOR putting up career seasons. 😂
2025 K-Rates vs LHP:
Lindor 13% | Vientos 23% | Alvarez 21% | Baty 24% | Soto 25%
Nimmo 26% | McNeil 16%
2025 OPS vs LHP -> Higher than Alonso OPS of .729:
Soto | Nimmo | Vientos | Alvarez -> limited AB
BUT OF COURSE ITS A GREAT IDEA to spend $30M a year on a player that makes sure we never improve against LHP, who cares, it’s not like MLB teams even use that many LHP right?
Alonso improved significantly versus fastballs 95 MPH and up last year, but how about the seasons prior to that?
His batting average on pitches 95 mph & faster has gone down every year since 2020: .353, .295, .287, .238, .200 (2024)
#Mets fans are experts on “Anomaly Years” production, doesn’t Alonso’s 2025 #’s vs FB qualify as an anomaly year?
Whoops never mind, historically power hitters, become better as they grow older, especially 1B, who aren’t athletic…
Do #Mets fans actually believe we wouldn’t have seen cliche articles comparing Alonso’s contract to:
A. Pujols & M. Cabrera -> lower AAV’s to Alonso, significantly better all-around hitters than Alonso & HOF caliber production prior to huge extensions signed, production declined significantly as they began to hit their early-mid 30’s.
P. Fielder & C. Davis -> 1B who signed monster extensions that they never lived up too.
We’d be hearing about these 4 examples every year, 24-7, if Alonso was retained & didn’t duplicate his 2025 production.
P. Konerko & F. Freeman -> rare examples of power hitting 1B who continued producing at a high level throughout their 30’s.
I get it, Alonso was a fan favorite, & A GREAT PLAYER, but let’s not pretend he was a perfect player with ZERO FLAWS, as the media is trying to manipulate you into thinking.
Alonso’s defense was the least of our concerns.
It’s a tough pill to swallow watching Alonso leave, & only time will tell if it’s the right move.
If you think the media would’ve been supportive of Alonso receiving a record extension, then you are the reason why the NY media deploys their “fear porn” campaigns incessantly.
They want to keep you hostile, afraid, and feeling hopeless…

#Mets have one of the best records in baseball, despite not even hitting their full stride, & not being full strength.
#Mets have the deepest farm system in franchise history, with multiple impact-talent prospects scheduled to make their MLB debuts every year, perfectly timed to complement star veterans entering multiple prime seasons, 5-10 depending on the player.
#Mets just spent $800 million to sign Juan Soto beating out the #Yankees and #RedSox. $341 million to keep Francisco Lindor. Potentially $350+ million to make sure Nimmo and Alonso finish their careers in New York.
#Mets veterans Lindor and Alonso are both primed to have career years because of the effect of having the presence of a generational talent like Juan Soto has on great players, potentially fueling a deep postseason run.
#Mets rotation is being led by Kodai Senga who spurned offers from the #Dodgers, #Yankees, & #Phillies
#Mets development team has produced tremendous progressions from homegrown talents in our lineup, rotation, & bullpen, maximizing production from players on pre-arbitration salaries & arbitration-eligible ones.
Cohen shelled out over $60+ million to acquire blue-chip talent, Acuna (NL rookie of the month), Clifford and Gilbert both top 10 prospects, for two 41 yr old veteran SP who barely even pitched for their new teams.
Cohen just spent $5 million to sign Elian Peña,the most highly touted International Free Agent hitter, whose offensive ceiling has been graded by scouts as being on par with the likes of Shohei Ohtani, Vlad Guerrero Jr, Juan Soto, Julio Rodriguez, & Fernando Tatis Jr. when they were signed as IFA prospects.
Despite everything I’ve just mentioned screaming in your face that shows the #Mets are in the best position they’ve ever been to finally become a sustainable winner for the first time in franchise history:
People still want to obsess over Pete Crow-Armstrong, because he’s had one good month, really?
LMAO 😂 😂😂
Everyone currently whining about PCA: *NEWSFLASH*
You had no clue who PCA was when we drafted him.
You had no clue who PCA was when he was a prospect.
You still didn’t know who PCA was after we traded him.
But after a couple weeks of highlights on MLB network, people are convinced he‘s Ken Griffey Jr reborn?
You aren’t smart enough to realize that the media networks incessantly covering PCA might be a tad jealous at what Cohen and the Mets have built, hence they focus on amplifying any negative talking point they can to fuel discourse amongst #MetsNation?
Are they obsessively covering how well Cam Smith has started his career since being traded to the #Astros?
Any obsessing over how Jesus Luzardo resurrected his career after being traded from #Marlins to the #Phillies?
Have you seen any national coverage of how stupid the Red Sox were for essentially trading away Mookie Betts to the Dodgers without a single player to show for it? MLB version of the Luka Doncic trade, but much worse.
Exactly…
Anyone who follows MLB prospects at an even elementary level wouldn’t be obsessing over one player, let alone PCA. Because you‘d know Cohen has spent more money than ANY OTHER OWNER IN MLB HISTORY to simultaneously upgrade the executive management team, the MLB roster, the farm system, & the team’s infrastructure & resources for player development.
Go find a safe space and cry it out people, go cry it out…
