The interview is not the place where you get the job.

It is the place where you confirm what they already hoped was true about you.

Let me explain.

By the time a recruiter calls you for an interview, they have already decided you might be the person. Your CV did the first job. The interview is just confirmation.

Which means most people are approaching interviews completely wrong.

They walk in trying to prove themselves. Nervous. Defensive. Trying to give the "right" answers.

The candidate who gets the offer walks in as a peer. Curious. Confident. Asking as many questions as they answer.

Here is what that looks like practically:

- Research the company so deeply that you can reference something specific about their work in the first 5 minutes. Not "I visited your website." Specifically: "I read about the expansion into Abuja last quarter. I'm curious how that's affecting the team structure here."

- Prepare 3 stories using the STAR format; Situation, Task, Action, Result. Most interview questions are asking for a story. Have 3 ready that you can adapt to almost any question they ask.

- Ask questions that show you're already thinking like an employee. "What does success look like for this role in the first 6 months?" tells them you're already planning to deliver.

- End every interview with: "Is there anything about my background that gives you pause?" It's a bold question. It also gives you a chance to address doubts before you leave the room.

The people who get jobs are rarely the smartest person who interviewed.

It's the one who made the interviewer feel most certain about their earlier thoughts.
