It is indeed the need of the hour to see that real spirituality works in both directions:
It looks outward with honesty, and that is rationality.
And it also looks inward with honesty, and that is self-knowledge.
Rationality and self-knowledge must go together, so say the Upanishads:
They enter into blinding darkness who worship only avidyā (outer rational knowledge);
into still greater darkness those who delight in only vidyā (inner self-knowledge).
He who knows vidyā and avidyā together crosses death through avidyā and attains immortality through vidyā.
~ Ishavasya Upanishad, Verses 9&11
Thank you @thekiranbedi
It is worth seeing why the Truth rarely feels good or comfortable:
The one who wants to comfort is the very one the Truth comes to dissolve. What is cut was never yours. What is exposed was already false.
Only the ego experiences this as a loss.
The truly beneficial and the pleasant are never one, so say the Upanishads:
The śreya (the truly beneficial) and preya (the pleasant) are different. Both approach a person, offering themselves. One who chooses śreya attains true well-being; one who chooses preya misses the highest goal.
~ Katha Upanishad, 1.2.1
