* The key issue: 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝.
* GDP methodology is periodically revised, especially given India’s large informal sector. The latest revision incorporates newer data.
* Crucially, the revision made the nominal GDP base 4% lower, making fiscal deficit and debt-to-GDP targets harder, not easier, to achieve.
* So, if GDP were being “manipulated” to make the government look good, why revise the base downward and make its own targets steeper? 🤔
* The differences stem from both methodology and underlying data. Comparisons must be like-for-like.
