I doubt my tweets have the reach to get replies to this question. But I will try: Hey ppl (especially those in #STS), if you had to list 3 to 5 canonical authors that examine digital technology thru the lens of democratic theory who would/should be on that list?
Simplification of humanity down to surface-level archetypes leads directly to assumptions, to bias, and from there to harmful experiences and outright discrimination. We have to embrace human complexity in order to walk away from dystopia.
Cultural blindness — the tendency for members of the privileged in any group to think of themselves as “average.” It's an easy leap from there to believing that anyone with less privilege is somehow "below average," rather than the truth: that everyone's contexts are different.
When reviewing design work, curiosity before critique is a good principle to follow. First, ask questions to make sure you fully understand the solution. Then ask why the team decided as they did. Only jump in with concerns after doing both.

Having the same discussion with my team. Currently saying no to custom except when there isn't a platform provided icon for our needs. Sadly there are several gaps for our product space.
Are custom icons on iPhone worth it? SUPER intrigued by the idea, but have been down this road before on Mac and have always reverted back at some point.
