It is important to highlight that the Government of Zimbabwe has an established programme for the procurement and distribution of ARVs through its Ministry of Health and Child Care, with support from international partners such as the Global Fund, PEPFAR, and UNAIDS. Reports from Zimbabwe’s health authorities confirm that the country currently maintains adequate ARV stocks for its national treatment programme.

Given this, it is highly unlikely that individuals would need to transport ARVs across borders, especially when Zimbabwe provides them freely through its national healthcare system. Therefore, the suggestion that the bus was carrying ARVs lacks credible evidence and should be treated with caution until verified by relevant authorities.

What was visibly found in bulk quantities is BronCleer, a product commonly purchased in pharmacies in South Africa. The fact that it was discovered in large volumes raises legitimate questions about illegal bulk purchasing and cross-border resale. It appears that certain individuals are sourcing BronCleer in South Africa and reselling it informally in Zimbabwe, where it might not be officially registered or available in the same quantities.

We also note that despite the widespread circulation of the BronCleer images, no clear visual or physical evidence of ARVs has been presented. If ARVs were indeed part of the consignment, they would have been visible when the contents were first photographed and shared online.

What we are seeing instead is a public health and regulatory issue involving the unauthorised bulk movement of pharmacy products like BronCleer.

THE ABSURDITY OF PRIOR RULES: Whilst in China, I had an opportunity - as we always do - to have a no-holds-barred discussion with a very senior Govt official. He recounted a little story which highlighted the absurdity of upholding prior rules without asking for the whys and wherefores of certain laws we inherited. MANICA PROVINCE OF MOZAMBIQUE wants bananas which are rotting in MUTARE because of oversupply. Traders from Mozambique cross the border with a view to wanting to buy bananas for resale in their country. THEY CAN’T, WON’T, unless they travel vast distances to HARARE’S NGUNGUNYANA BUILDING which houses our Agricultural Ministry to get PERMITS (for a fee of course) - phytosanitary permits, I think. We demand permits before MOZAMBICANS CAN BUY FROM US!!! We demand permits from foreigners, IN OTHER WORDS, for them to give us THEIR MARKETS for OUR EXPORTS!! In a tone of near resignation, the same official said the same SELF-IMPOSED NON-TARIFF BARRIER held for foreigners who seek to buy our beef from so-called RED ZONES. Red Zones by EUROPEAN UNION definition. Meanwhile Zimbabweans buy and chop meat from same RED ZONES - without such restrictions!! They never visit a doctor soon after chopping RED ZONE BEEF!! We are FASTIDIOUS in inflicting EU standards on neighbours eager to chop our beef, standards we do not invoke on ourselves? It turns out all these rules were left on our STATUTES by RHODESIANS; we enforce them with the born-again zeal of, er, Zimbabweans!!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
