Matatu Chronicles... Meru Edition
There’s a special kind of patience you unlock once you decide to do a long-distance trip with a PSV especially to Meru. First, the matatu has to fill not almost fill, not 95%… FULL. After paying, you sit there questioning your life choices as stopovers become social events, WhatsApp groups form, and the driver insists “ni dakika tano tu” for the next 45 minutes - 2,hrs.
Mwea stopover. The famous one. The driver announces “Dakika kumi” to relieve yourselves. Chaos follows. People disappear to buy rice, nyama, soda, life itself… only to board another matatu identical to the one we came with because all of them stop at the same place. One kilometre later, from the back seat:
“Dere simama nitapike!”
And you realize… to qualify as a driver on this route, you must be rude. Otherwise, ukisimama for every “simama”, you’ll arrive next week.
Then the journey continues. Nithi corners greet you with speed, drama, and near-prayers. The driver is driving like he’s late for his own wedding, yet somehow… the trip still takes forever. The only cars that confidently pass you is Mercedes-Benz E-Class and above, usually driven by a suspiciously young guy with shades not a mzee, and one aggressive GTI that disappears like a glitch in the matrix. Exaggerated speed, zero progress.
And just when you see the sign “Welcome to Meru County” and your heart jumps? Please relax. That sign is a scam. That’s another 7 hours mentally. Some long-distance trips honestly feel like cross-border travel passport ikikosekana ni bahati yako.
That’s when I swore never again. Some journeys are better enjoyed in peace, comfort, good music, and zero strangers vomiting behind you.
That’s how I graduated from Matatu Chronicles to hiring a car. Freedom, sanity, and arrival while still young.
Because some trips shouldn’t feel like survival missions.
Some journeys need speed.
Others need silence, comfort, and good energy.
That’s why our self-drive car hire Nairobi options are clean, serviced, and road-trip ready.
