🚨EU Rights Groups Call on South Korea to Release Elderly Detainees

The demand was specific.
✅Review the pretrial detention of 95-year-old Shincheonji Chairman Lee Man-hee.
✅Keep the response to 83-year-old Family Federation leader Hak-ja Han Moon neutral and proportionate.

August 7, Seoul. Five organizations held a joint press conference: HRWF, CAP LC, FOREF, CESNUR and Bitter Winter.

This was not a defence of any theology, HRWF said. It was a defence of one principle: fundamental rights apply equally to all.

They built the case in four moves.

Obligation. Korea ratified the ICCPR in 1990 and the Convention against Torture in 1995. The Mandela Rules call for house arrest, not prison, for a 95-year-old accused of a non-violent offence.

Precedent. Hong Kong bailed Cardinal Zen. Vietnam gave Thich Quang Do house arrest. Democracies found middle ground.

Necessity. If the evidence already supported an indictment, why detain at all? And was it gathered neutrally, or under a narrative casting the accused community as a "sect" or "cult"?

Pattern. The charges trace back to ordinary political participation by minority believers. Studies of Shincheonji congregations in Europe, Argentina and Australia found hostility rising abroad.

Korea, they said, "has crossed a worrying line."

Those present signed a formal letter to the Korean government demanding Lee's immediate release.

Yoon tells Olympic Park protesters from prison: "Don't shrink before entrenched power"

Yoon Suk-yeol had one thing to say to the young people at Olympic Park.

"Truly remarkable, impressive and dependable."

It came out of prison on August 6 through his lawyer, Bae Eui-cheol.

What Yoon told them:

Entrenched power only looks strong. Young people hold "the asset called the future." That makes them the stronger side.
There is no need to shrink before it.
Even if the road ahead is a gravel field rather than a path of flowers, never lose heart.
Treat hardship as a blessing.

Bae said people had asked after Yoon's health in a 40C heat wave. Yoon said he was fine. He was more worried about children and the elderly in the heat.

Since June they have stood outside the counting site, calling for a legitimate election.

I am inspired by this post by Chance Son, whose father was imprisoned 145 days by the S. Korean government under President Lee Jae-myun's leadership. I hope that they and others will remember others like Mrs Han Hak-ja, already in detention for over 300 days on charges, and who is awaiting a verdict in her case around August 30th. There are others also under investigation or detention mainly those seen as aligned with the conservative views in S. Korea.

We are nobody.

No impressive background. Nothing to our name. And yet God has used us despite our lack.

My father, Pastor Son Hyun-bo, was jailed 145 days — no bail, no conviction — simply for preaching Scripture according to his conscience. While every other church shut its doors, the world pointed fingers and asked, “Why are you still worshiping?” We believe God was pleased with him, even then.

In high school, my father attended a trade school just to keep his Sunday worship. When he chose church over a certification exam scheduled on a Sunday, he was expelled. But days before the makeup exam, a fire broke out at the school — the test was pushed to Monday, and he graduated after all.

Before the seminary application deadline, with no money for tuition, a Buddhist monk placed the enrollment fee in his hands. After he enrolled with nowhere to go, that same monk fed him and gave him shelter.

Under Korea’s military dictatorship, he served in the 701st Special Forces, a unit formed to eliminate North Korea’s dictator. Training left no room for Sunday worship, and from his very first week he was beaten daily by senior soldiers, NCOs, and officers — beaten nearly out of his mind. By the time his service ended, his entire platoon had come to faith in Jesus.

We praise God for every one of these miracles, shown through my father and through Segero Church.

And today, our family met President Trump. Maybe that, too, is one more sign of His grace.

Fear no man. Fear no government. Fear God alone.
No matter what the world says, may we — and may this become a movement — stand on the truth of Scripture, on moral law, and on the values God has given us.

"If this case continues then Korean politicians and media outlets that spoke negatively about President Trump could be placed under the same logic."

Senior U.S. officials are well aware of the Korean situation and told Tan at Mar-a-Lago,

"The Republic of Korea is currently in crisis."

Discussions proceed between Tan, the White House, State Department and intelligence agencies.

Since Tan's arrival,

Lee Jae-myung's attack on freedom of speech is selective by design.

On Sunday, the South Korean president called for shutting down right-wing online communities like "Ilbe" and other so-called hate sites.

Ilbe posts extreme content. That is true.

Yet for ten years, Korea has let left-leaning sites like Womad, Megalia, and DC Inside galleries spread misandry, regional bias, hatred of conservatives, rewriting of history, attacks on anti-communist memory, and mockery of the dead.

No president stepped in. One incident at the Roh Moo-hyun memorial turned it overnight into a crisis. Closure, fines, and punishments are suddenly on the table.

In 2018, the Moon Jae-in government tried the same thing. Legal staff said shutdown was not possible unless over 70 percent of posts were illegal, and would break the constitution's free speech protection.

Lee is now signaling he will change that rule itself.

This is selective censorship.

Speech that helps his administration is left alone. Speech that criticizes it is called criminal.

Once a president decides what counts as "hate" by politics, the next targets are critics, conservative YouTubers, the opposition, and regular citizens.

This is authoritarian rule dressed up as "social protection." It is an attack on free speech itself.
