- They traded away Julius Randle and Naz Reid
- There are no power forwards on the roster
- They only have minimum contracts to offer to stay under their 2nd apron hard-cap
- They presumably could have taken back Grant Williams, a power forward, instead of Josh Green, not a power forward, in the Charlotte deal
Everything signals Minnesota has had other things planned for power forward. And has for a while — or is running a big risk of going to camp with a really imbalanced roster.
But I would assume the power forward thing comes to fruition in one of three ways…
1. A salary dumping trade that creates enough space to sign a meaningful free agent to the MLE (tax MLE if you dump a little, full MLE if you dump a lot)
2. A trade of Green/DiVincenzo as the salary match for a PF in the $15M to $20M range. (No full draft picks to offer as sweeteners — rookie contract players like Shannon or Beringer would need to be the sweeteners)
3. Waiving and stretching Green’s contract to reduce his cap hit for this season by $10M (his 1 year, $15M would be spread over 3 years — $5M a year of dead money against the cap), creating flexibility beneath the 2nd apron to make a trade where they take back more money than they send out or to sign a free agent with the tax MLE ($6M)
@mconley11@Timberwolves Huge thanks to one of my favorite basketball players of all time. I’m truly grateful that you played for my beloved Minnesota Timberwolves. I hope to you see back and involved with the team in the future.
Free agent guard Mike Conley Jr. has agreed to a one-year deal to sign with the Boston Celtics, sources tell ESPN. Conley becomes only the 14th player in NBA history to reach 20 seasons.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are deeply saddened by the passing of Hall of Fame coach Rick Adelman.
Adelman served as head coach of the Timberwolves from 2011-14 and exemplified leadership, integrity and professionalism throughout his distinguished career. Serving as head coach for five teams over 23 NBA seasons, he became one of the game’s most respected and accomplished leaders, finishing 10th on the league’s all-time wins list. Adelman made a lasting impact on our organization, his players and the game of basketball.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to wife Mary Kay, the Adelman family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
@balldontTy@reillyadam Totally agree. They should also keep a tally like flagrant fouls. If a guy reaches a certain number, then he gets a one-game suspension.
@AaronGleeman Aging really does suck and it’s hard to watch our favorites become shells of themselves. If he wants it, he’ll be a great coach or GM someday.
Chris Finch lit the match. Anthony Edwards was the fuse. For maybe the first time all season, the Timberwolves didn’t play with fire. They were the fire. https://t.co/2edIfHw6cm
@CharlieWaltonMN That big shot, that big block, that big rebound, and that big steal to ice it. Anthony Edwards played like a leading man on a champion
@JonKrawczynski Thanks so much for the response. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again, you’re a great writer/reporter and we are fortunate to have you.
@JonKrawczynski So true…down their best player and their wise point guard to start the game…and lost their starting point guard within 4 minutes. Gritty and gutsy are perfect words
@JonKrawczynski Just some huge shots from Donte. He didn’t quite seem like himself last season. But this version of Donte (the clutch shots, the hustle plays) is the guy I was so excited to get when we traded KAT. He’s been one of my favorite players for years.
@JonKrawczynski Thanks for sharing this. We are lucky to have the Wolves coverage that we do. I can’t imagine that any other team has it better than we do.
