The Parliamentary Budget Officer just said Ottawa’s accounting “obscures the true scale of federal debt.”

Loans to Crown corporations and capital spending are booked as assets instead of expenses. That keeps them off the annual deficit number while the actual borrowing still happens.

The PBO projects federal debt hitting $1.67 trillion by 2030-31. Interest charges climb to $83 billion that same year.

Carney ran as the adult who would clean up the books. The independent watchdog says the books are being presented in a way that hides how fast the debt is actually growing.

Interest is already the fastest-growing expense. By the end of the decade it will take more money than Ottawa currently sends the provinces for health care.

Kids and grandkids get the bill either way. The only question is whether the government is willing to show the full number while they’re still writing the cheques.

Position statement.

If Zionism were simply about establishing the right of Jews to live safely wherever they are, including in their ancestral homeland, I would be a Zionist.

But this isn't what Zionism is about. It is, and always has been, about creating a Jewish-majority state in a land where the majority of people are not Jewish. This necessarily means either removing most non-Jews or denying them citizenship. Zionists have done, and are still doing, both.

I believe in the right of ALL people to live safely wherever they are. I oppose every means used to drive people out of their homes and lands: mass murder, ethnic cleansing, systematic violence, denial of citizenship, violation of basic human rights.

Zionism uses all these means to create and maintain its Jewish state.

Therefore I am an anti-Zionist.

Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are not aberrations on the margins of Israeli politics.
They reflect a strain of Zionism deeply embedded in the Jewish Israeli electorate.
A March 2025 survey reported in Haaretz found that 82% of Jewish Israelis supported the forced expulsion/ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza, while 56% supported expelling Palestinian CITIZENS of Israel.
Those figures shatter the comforting illusion that the problem begins and ends with a handful of extremists.
The three leading contenders—Naftali Bennett, Gadi Eisenkot, and Netanyahu—share broadly similar positions on Gaza, the occupied West Bank, illegal settlements, and the systematic repression, subjugation, and oppression of all Palestinians. The central issue is not personality but policy, rooted in Zionist ideology: different leaders, substantial continuity.
Any debate over the Abraham Accords must confront this same underlying reality. The Arab countries’ joint statement identifies Israel’s illegal military occupation as the principal source of regional insecurity and instability.
On five occasions, Israel has rejected offers of normalization and security guarantees involving all Arab countries and additional Muslim states because those offers required an end to its brutal military occupation, now in its 59th year.
The fundamental obstacle is not the absence of a diplomatic opening. It is Israel’s REFUSAL to end the MILITARY occupation.
Replacing its prime minister is no substitute for changing that policy—and without that change, a new leader would represent continuity, not a break with the status quo.

لأكون واضحاً، لا أعتقد أن الأخبار القادمة من إسرائيل بشأن رفض رئيس الأركان إيال زامير تنفيذ أوامر نتنياهو بشن ضربة عسكرية على إيران هي أخبار كاذبة، أو أنها نُشرت بهدف تمويه الإيرانيين. لا أعتقد ذلك إطلاقاً.

أنا أفهم إسرائيل جيداً، وأعرف طريقة تفكير مؤسساتها، وهذه ليست الطريقة التي تعتمدها إسرائيل في التمويه والخداع العسكري.

هناك أمر لا يفهمه كثيرون، وهو أنه منذ قيام دولة إسرائيل، كانت المؤسسة العسكرية والأمنية جزءاً أساسياً من المؤسسة السياسية، بل إن المؤسسة العسكرية هي عملياً إحدى أهم ركائز النظام السياسي الإسرائيلي. وحتى عندما تنشب خلافات حادة بين القيادتين العسكرية والسياسية، فإن هذه الخلافات تبقى في الغالب داخل الغرف المغلقة، ولا تُستخدم لأغراض عسكرية أو سياسية خارجية.

والسبب بسيط، وهو أن تحويل الصراع بين الجيش والقيادة السياسية إلى أداة لتحقيق أهداف معينة قد يؤدي إلى تفكيك إسرائيل من الداخل. وقد رأينا كيف كادت إسرائيل أن تنفجر داخلياً قبيل السابع من أكتوبر، عندما اندلعت المظاهرات ضد نتنياهو بسبب مشروع التعديلات القضائية، وامتد الصراع إلى المؤسسة العسكرية نفسها، حتى وصل إلى تهديد تماسك الجيش الإسرائيلي.

ولهذا أقول بكل وضوح: لن يجرؤ أحد في إسرائيل على اختلاق تمرد لرئيس هيئة الأركان على رئيس الحكومة، واستخدام هذا التمرد غطاءً لخداع إيران. لن يجرؤ أحد على اللعب بهذه الورقة تحديداً، لأن تداعياتها الداخلية قد تكون أخطر بكثير من أي مكاسب عسكرية يمكن تحقيقها من وراء هذا الخداع.

أما رفض إيال زامير تنفيذ أوامر نتنياهو، فهو أمر مفهوم تماماً في سياق ما يحدث داخل إسرائيل الآن، وخاصة مع اقتراب الانتخابات. تخيلوا أن يأتي نتنياهو إلى رئيس الأركان ويطلب منه إشعال حرب مدمرة مع إيران، لا لتحقيق هدف عسكري ضروري، وإنما لخدمة مصالحه السياسية وتأجيل الانتخابات. من الطبيعي أن ترفض قيادة الجيش الانجرار إلى حرب بهذه الخطورة لأغراض انتخابية.

وهناك عامل آخر لا يقل أهمية، وهو أن الدولة العميقة في إسرائيل، التي تتداخل فيها المؤسسات العسكرية والأمنية والاقتصادية والقانونية، لا تريد استمرار نتنياهو في الحكم. وبتقديري، فإن هذه المؤسسات تدعم موقف إيال زامير وتحركاته الحالية، وهو ما يفسر أيضاً قدرته على الوقوف في وجه نتنياهو في مسألة بهذه الخطورة.

ولكن هذا لا يعني بالضرورة أن نتنياهو فقد القدرة على ضرب إيران. فقد ينجح في النهاية في فرض قراره وإخضاع قيادة الجيش لإرادته السياسية بوسائل أخرى.

المشكلة أن نتنياهو أصبح الآن في ورطة حقيقية. فإذا استمر الصدام بينه وبين قيادة الجيش، وتحول إلى مواجهة علنية واسعة داخل إسرائيل، فقد يدفع ثمناً انتخابياً باهظاً. فالوقوف في مواجهة المؤسسة العسكرية والأمنية داخل إسرائيل ليس أمراً بسيطاً، وقد يكلّفه خسارة شريحة واسعة من الناخبين الذين يثقون بالجيش أكثر من ثقتهم بالسياسيين.

ولهذا فإن التطور الأخير غيّر حساباتي بشأن توقيت الضربة على إيران، لا بشأن نوايا نتنياهو. فما زلت مقتنعاً بأنه اتخذ قراراً بضرب إيران قبل الانتخابات، ولكنني لم أتوقع أن يكون العائق الذي سيقف أمام تنفيذ هذا القرار هو رئيس هيئة الأركان الإسرائيلي نفسه.

نتنياهو يريد الحرب، والجيش يعترض طريقه، وأي محاولة من نتنياهو لكسر هذا الاعتراض قد تنقل الصراع من مواجهة عسكرية مع إيران إلى أزمة داخلية تهدد مستقبله السياسي نفسه.
